Ten of these 800 class shunters were built for the South Australian Railways by English electric at their Rocklea plant in Queensland, powered by an English Electric 6SRKT engine rated at 750hp.
Introduced in 1956 they spent most of their working life on trip and shunt workings in the Port Adelaide area until the last was withdrawn in 1991.
Ownership was transferred from the state owned SAR to the federally owned Australian National Railways in 1978. 809 was seen on shed at Mile End depot on 5 August 1987.
