Australia Northern Railroad was a short lived corporate entity to highlight Genesee & Wyoming's involvement in the construction of the Alice Springs to Darwin railway. Expansion of its Australian franchise and partnership with Wesfarmers soon saw ANR for subsumed by Australian Railroad Group.
(Ironically ANR was the acronym for Australian National Railways the purchase of which heralded G & W's arrival in Australia.)
In the 'bargain of the century' G & W purchased 16 surplus 422 EMD-powered units from New South Wales state owned operator Freightcorp in 2000.
Four of these were refurbished for use on Alice - Darwin construction trains and were lined up at the Dry creek Motive Power centre (Adelaide) in November 2001 prior to despatch north.
