The Australian Railway Historical Society in partnership with Railway Adventures and the unique Ruwenzori Retreat invite you to a one-off experience – access to the collection of Off The Rails.
Since closing its doors in 1999, Off The Rail’s rare collectables have been stored in Mudgee, away from the eyes of the public. ARHS has been granted exclusive access to this unique collection and through this tour, would like to share it with you. Not only will you have the opportunity to view and purchase some of these items, you will also get the chance to learn about their origin and discuss their story with Scott McGregor himself.
The weekend will be one not-to-miss. From the time of departure of our specially chartered train, you will be looked after, treated to exclusive events at Ruwenzori Retreat and in the scenic Mudgee region.
The line to Mudgee dates back to the 1880s and is one of the most beautiful in NSW. It has been closed to regular passenger trains since 1992 and so this is a rare opportunity to travel on the line as far as Rylstone and return.
There will be a couple of stops along the way and following the run over the Blue Mountains, the train skirts the magnificent Capertee Valley to the rural idyll of Rylstone. From there you’ll be transferred in comfortable coaches to the historic food and wine lover’s paradise of Mudgee, where the enchantment continues. Just north of town is a train that goes nowhere, parked on the top of the Great Dividing Range, offering an unbeatable view of the surrounding hills. Welcome to Ruwenzori Estate, an unrivalled railway experience combined with the best the region has to offer. Books, artefacts, furniture, prints and much more are on the menu for this special open day and exclusive sale. You will be joining all the fun of the fair with time to view the collection, do some shopping and enjoy guided tours of Scott’s special folly. We cap off the day with a sunset cocktail reception at Ruwenzori before heading back to town in the early evening.
Your return to Sydney by private train via the historic ‘cement’ town of Kandos includes a visit to the excellent Kandos museum and historic railway station. Lunch will be provided on the way and your arrival back in Sydney completes our great weekend escape.
