Yesterdat I caught 7M from FSS to BKN, it was the 5.20 Lilydale train. 
144M was either the 4.27 or 4.38 to Sandringham, I need to find my notes to confirm which one.
At 5.32 I saw an unknown Met-Liveried Hitachi arriving at Richmond from Sandringham.

The Elecrail set (7M leading I presume*) destined for the City Loop passed my XT between Heatherdale and Mitcham at around 0540 this morning. Last car 99M proudly displaying Aspendale on its desto.
*Only numbers I saw of it was 1946T and 99M at the back on green and yellow.

Rode refubished set 10M-1909T-21M-49M-1987T-196M on the 19:05 down Sandringham service this evening. It returned to FSS on the 19:41 up.
Vandals have already got to it sadly, with a few tags and at least one scratched window in the carriage I rode (10M).

37M-1979T-105M-110M-1910T-42M ran down to Cranbourne this morning departing FSS 8:53.
Edit: Tomohawk provides some interesting insights. It sounds like it was an empty car movement if it ran through Clayton without stopping. I didn't get to see whether any of the seats were occupied nor whether it actually stopped at any stations so I judged its destination from the timetable. Hopefully, the service to Cranbourne was close behind that empty Hitachi.

Most certainly did, it ran express through Clayton just as I got off the Pakenham stopper in front of it. Would have been a slow trip to Cranbourne until Dandenong behind that stopper.....

Last night I spotted a refurbished Hitachi running the 7:06 Down Southern Cross service (Football Special) - running 10 minutes late. And an unrefurbished Hitachi coming from Sandringham spotted at Richmond around 7:30.

I keep seeing Hitachis stabling at either Melbourne Yard or North Melbourne sidings about 9am though to 9:30am - at least two a day on my morning commute. Perhaps the Hitachi runs have settled down to inbound runs from out east?

The 0525 to Pakenham on platform 7 was a refurbished (all silver) set today at Flinders St. Unfortunately there was, for whatever earthly reason, a 6 car X'Trapolis to Alamein in platform 6 blocking it from my view from 626M (not a Mazda!) in platform 3.
Anyway, finally caught the last two cars exiting towards Richmond which were 1987T and 196M. That's the one with the fuzzy Comeng seat covers isn't it, or is that 197M?

Why is there only Hitachi trains on the Sandringham line?
We currently have seven, six-car Hitachi trains remaining in service out of 166 six carriage sets in total. It was expected that these trains would be decommissioned after the Commonwealth Games in 2006, however, due to current and future projects, such as installing a ‘black box’ device to our trains and over 20% growth in patronage in the past two years; the Hitachi trains will remain in service for the immediate future.
The introduction of over 200 additional weekly services across the network (with 30 of these on the Sandringham line) in September 2007, required the Hitachi trains, previously used as ‘spare’ trains, to re-enter daily service. Additional services could not be provided without the operation of Hitachi trains at this time. As a result, two Hitachi trains now operate on the Sandringham line, during peak periods, on a daily basis. Hitachi trains are now scheduled to operate seven of the 34 peak period services each day.
Restrictions placed on the operation of Hitachi trains, particularly in relation to terminating stations, the length of the line and City Loop operations are also a determining factor as to where the Hitachi trains will be operated. The State Government has recently confirmed that it will spend $800 million on new trains over the next ten years, with 18 new trains scheduled to be in service by the end of 2009. Current plans are for the Hitachi trains to be retired by 2011.
Knowing this should help people see more Hitachi's more often!

Given the trailer set was 1987T, it would have been 196M trailling (10M leading).
Speaking of which, this set was spotted on the 08:45 up Frankston on Monday (21/7).
And yes, its one of the sets with the refubished interior.

Thanks Craig... I wasn't sure which ones have the new covers yet, they naturally don't run them when I'm on the trains (somewhere between 9PM and 11:36).
For the record, spotted another Hitachi on Thursday night at around 9:30PM.
144M and co was powered up in the Ringwood yard (Lilydale side) with its desto displaying Flinders Street and boxing in an EDI Comeng. Don't know if it went anywhere that late at night though; after around 8:00 both lines are run by nothing but 3 car XTs until the last, with not even a Comeng in sight.
