Koala Siding Today

    I went for a walk from nyora to koala and took some pictures, its a shame to see it like this. The line from nyora to koala is in good condition, and as you will see koala seems to be forgotten, just like the rest of the line to cranbourne.

    I went along a couple of times. Didn't have to walk from Nyora though, you could drive in from the SG Hwy almost to the siding. haven't been there since, so no idea if you can still do that.

    I keep meaning to scan my photos, but still haven't. Here's a few I already had done though.

    Well, it's probably the length of the loop rather than the siding. But would be similar I suspect.

    Loaded hoppers have already been pushed forward of the loader and are fouling the loop points.

    P22 approaches Koala Siding.

    P22 arrives at Koala siding with 14 empties.

    With the up end points fouled, the crew shunt the empties into the loop from the down end.

    ...and then collect the 10 loaded hoppers.

    I seem to recall that the combination of heavy sand load, sharp curve on the siding and the short upgrade made for some great sound effects from the P.

    I think P22 used a bit of its own sand here too.

    P22 gradually nears the mainline.

    Rather than leave the loaded hoppers on the mainline, P22s crew shunted the empties into the siding with the loaded hoppers still attached. So here we see P22 with 24 VHSFs

    That last photo the P looks like its on a bit of a lean, was their a bit of a crease when they came up out of the siding?  Just looks a bit uneven sitting their.

    I have heard P Classes referred to as little XPT's. Maybe tilt train would be a better nick name.

    It'll be a good day when Austrains does the P class loco so I can run my VHSF hoppers around. This is one of the many kind of trains i will prototype, and your pictures have helped with this.

    The reason was ~ It was part of V/Line's 1990 plan to rid all their trains from the South Gippsland Line, as thats when regular track work ceased and the track was been run Into the ground

    Just add a dash of trade union "activity" to this and you are spot on Bevans. Saw it all happen mid 80's. Sad really!

    Not quite sure. I think I wrote the details down at the time, but I've, err, put them in a "safe" place. Laughing

    I think the second visit (first lot of photos) was shortly before the sand train stopped running. I'll add the date/s to my site once I find out. But about 1996-7 I'd say.

    ok thanks for that. was the line from kolala to leongatha being used by sgr at the time? do you know how many sand trains a day went to the siding?

    It was 1 train a day.I did it with a mate of mine not long before it closed.My mate actually delivered the Y Class down just before the line closed.
