Farewell SZ7

Won't SZ7 be "unretired" again when the Albury line re-opens and V/Line loses rolling stock to the standard gauge?

Depends on how many VLocities have been built by then Smile

Plus, the services are still running as trains to Seymour.

Isn't it funny that when you find out something is going to be retired, you realised how few photos you have? The timetable was always a pain for me - the morning run was the last train I could get to work, and the afternoon trip was before I finished.

Monday morning: freshly repainted N454 at Footscray

This morning: N459 leads set SZ7 through Yarraville on the up - surprisingly on time given the delays to suburban services!

Tonights 16.55 Marshall service consisted of an unknown locomotive, and VN12, in lieu of SZ7.

N469 was stabled on set SZ7 in the Bank Sidings at 1535, engine running. I assume something shagged up between then and departure time...

Enjoyed a ride on S27 this afternoon, on the 16:55 down Marshall.

Kind Regards

Z 57 Set is planned to be withdrawn from service on arrival at Southern Cross on Monday 9th August, ex  the 0747 ex South Geelong, (0850 Arrival) -  the 1655 down service is planned to be replaced with 1 x 2VL and 1 x 3 VL (00 & 42) - however 2VL00 has not been delivered as yet.

As a result of this the N class loco that used to be on the 1655 Marshall run will be cascaded to the 1612 Bacchus Marsh - return as the 0505 up , 0655 Down South Geelong returning as the 0842 up.

This will eliminate the use of PH van and A class loco on this run., and will run as N loco and FSH set.

Early VLP A class retirement perhaps? Or are they planning to use them elsewhere? 2 out of 3 'traditional' A class allotted runs have been N class lately.

Interesting considering the recent repainting of (I think) A66.

How many powervans do VLP have nowadays? Since three are now permanently allocated to the three SG sets, perhaps there aren't enough to go around? Considering all N sets now have BZN/BTN cars without the onboard generators, a shortage of powervans would severely limit the usefulness of the A Class.

Just speculation, is all Smile

EDIT: Corrected, it was A66 that copped a repaint, not A60 Smile

Four vans will remain on the broad gauge - PH451, PH452, PH453 and PH454

I'm hoping for some more nice winter weather before retirement - from Monday morning:

I have to work evenings this week, I hope to make a run tomorrow and/or friday on the up and again on the last up Monday morning before my day shift. (it's an early start!)

Wander if they will be broken up straight away and used as loose cars or stored at Newport short term for later use?

The BCZ will probably either be used as a loose car or converted to a BZN. As for the BS cars; who knows. They might keep the set for football specials or something, or tack them onto N car sets, even if only for the school holidays or something.

They need to be repainted, those carriages look a lot worse than they were a few months ago..

That is for sure, on a couple of them you can see V/Line Tangerine & Grey coming through, particularly through the blue:

One thought I've had
There is a rumour that the remain BG N car sets will be modified in the same fashion as those for the NE SG line into 8 5 Pure N car sets from the remaining 14 BG sets, and the former Z cars (now modified N cars BZN/BTN) made up into dedicated peak hour sets for Geelong etc.
Could they not remove the East end toilet and place a bike rack the same as BS218 for the remaining, then modify the last compartment into a conductors workstation, remove the seats, add a desk, chair and lock on the door.
This then gives you 5 more conductor/bike spaces, helps replace the lost 6 when the N cars are rearranged.
More Vlocities coming online so may not need as many sets. Plus there will be One extra N car than required for the 8 5 car sets, if they leave one ACN unmodified there is another conductor/bike space car.
Be interesting to see how many dedicated former Z sets are made up for Peak hour traffic.

I would envisage that further VL deliveries will replace H set runs on the Geelong line, followed by other loco hauled peak trains.

The real problem facing V/Line is the fact there is no room at regional locations for overnight storage and no room at Southern Cross during the day.

The only location with spare capacity is Kyneton overnight.

With impending VL deliveries and Sunbury electrification, V/Line may well end up with a surplus of loco hauled stock.

As H sets are removed from the Geelong line runs there future may be as all assembled in Push Pull mode running to Bacchus Marsh peak trains.

What about Traraglon? they have plenty of space. Maybe V/line could use the locomotive hauled services down here and speed up some services?

Last time I heard anything about stabling at Traralgon was in 2008, and they were chockers of an evening.

It was pretty quiet when I went past there tonight. There was 1 3VL in the Vlocity stabling area, while the rest of the yard was quiet and completely empty (there was no occo's). The 2x2VL's which formed the 8423 down quickly scuttled back to Melbourne soon after arrival

Interesting to see SZ7 stabled directly behind A60 & A62 - 50's loco's with 50's cars! Southern Cross:

Would make a fitting send off!

ML2, was that photo taken this morning?

If so folks, I think we've seen the last of SZ7/Z57! It usually stables in Geelong on the weekends, and unless it runs on the empty cars down there tomorrow night, which I'm doubting, I don't think it'll be on the 0747 up South Geelong on Monday Razz
