Re-developing Box Hill

  ChoooChoo Chief Train Controller

On a trip to Box Hill station, I was shocked at how poor the train station (and to an extent bus depot) was in comparison to the trams+shopping centre+overall suburb/area.

It was gloomy, relatively dark (yes- it's under the shopping centre, but there could easily be more lighting to create a better aura), and practically empty (on a weekday, mid afternoonish)

The precinct has so much potential to be a prime example of Transport Orientated Development (especially since Box Hill is an activity centre), with great access to trams+bus+trains all in the one location.

Any idea why it's been left in such a state? Do you think it's going to be revitalized anytime soon?

I know there are much worse stations to worry about, but what get's me concerned about this one, is that it's a station on the verge of being great especially with its high patronage (10th busiest

I thought you hated the Frankston line Smile

I think Box Hill is one of the busiest non loop stations. Weight of numbers.

Dandenong has more assaults than Box Hill though. Out of assaults or unruly behaviour, I know which I'd choo-choo-choose Very Happy I don't place too much weight on stats anyway, some staff are more diligent about reporting behaviour/crimes than others. The same goes for passengers.

Box Hill is a nice area, but it's also a good stop off point for scum from the ends of the lines, with the lure of shops and all that entails.

School holidays, yeah? Only four weeks to go...

The stats are a load of bollocks regarding assaults, as Attila76 already said.  Let's face it: it's the PTUA's stats, and they're only interested in putting their fugly spokestwat on telly to say "Public transport BAD!" lots.

Box Hill, in terms of sheer revenue, outdoes any other station outside the loop and Flagstaff to boot.

Let's just say that I'm pretty well-versed as to how busy Bock Heel gets, and it's busy all the damn time, more so than one kiddie rocking up on one afternoon...

Haha, I couldn't help but laugh at everybody's posts, and thanks for the picture! It really made my day (yes- i've had a slow day today).

That's a good point, it is a major shopping precinct, so everybody gets lured there.

And good call at the "-ians" quiet true!

Local councillors have lobbied for an upgrade of Box Hill Bus station and the train station. The former Labor government dragged their heels on the issue and only contributed to a minor 'upgrade' of the bus station as part of the Smartbus 700/903 project which saw the area repainted.

The Liberals made some noises about an upgrade during the election campaign - whether that translates into a committment is unknown. We'll find out in May when the state budget is handed down. Ted B and co will be expected to meet many of their promises.

I've only worked at Bock Heel twice, both times I was surprised at how busy the barriers get, it would probably help if more people validated their tickets (or had the right zone) but it's inhumane to expect such a thing. I'm sure it violates the Geneva Convention somehow.

If Box Hill actually followed suit like the trams, most people would have the right tickets. The usual people who get stuck at the wrong end of the barriers are the ones who have been unfortunate enough to travel express from Camberwell (brilliant setup, isn't it - Zone 1 direct to Zone 2 with no overlap on either end), and the usual bogans from east of Box Hill who don't give a toss about buying a ticket and attempt to jump the barriers anyway.

Having worked Bock Heel myself, based on the sheer number of people who come to the bypass window, I'm betting it's deliberate.

People going into Zone 2 on a Zone 1 ticket and trying it on. When you're talking about hundreds each day, and when you're there you see some of the same faces time after time.

So many things I could say right now, except heisdeadjim is spot on.

Precisely STB. For better or worse the AO's don't seem to be able to be there as often as they should, and because there's hordes of them even IF there's an AO presence you still stand a chance of getting through unscathed.

And before the usual suspects jump up and down, a genuine tourist, no problems. But it's the locals. Same face, same time, every day. No zone 2.

Myki is starting to hurt them because, they're not touching off sometimes to and so a ZOne 2 only trip is starting to cost them more than it should.

To topic, logistically, re-doing Box Hill will be a major PITA. I don't really see how it can easily be done.

What Box Hill desperately needs is elevators and/or esculators that take you direct to and from the platforms and the bus stops without having to go through the shopping centre.
The temporary set up they did during the Middleborough Rd rebuilding is virtually an admission that the current set up is unsatisfactory.

This is the same problem with Melbourne Central's set up! It takes so long to exit and enter the station, got to get on escalator after escalator.

In regards to Box Hill- how do you enter and exit the station once the shopping centre is closed (5:30 pm?)
  heisdeadjim Chief Commissioner

Main exits remain open.

Box Hill was redeveloped to encourage commuters to shop and shoppers to commute there, not to function just as a transport interchange.

Fair point on making commuters peruse and stimulate the local economy.

But that aside, the bus interchange itself is dingy, and the escalators need a revamp - bigger.

And remain open until the station staff indicate that the platforms have been checked and the last train has departed.
  LamontCranston Chief Commissioner

Relocate the buses to where the arcade is? Puts them between the closest entrance to the station and the trams. No more going half way through the shopping centre and up/down a lone escalator.
Of course it demolishes the only halfway decent part of the place.
Or that median strip the 109 tram terminates at? Replace the current car park, cafe, and little strip of trees.

If they ever do put a tram on Station St from Doncaster down to Box Hill and further, extending the platforms on the down end and putting an entrance up to the street would be convenient.

Whole place ought to be demolished and rebuilt really.

Passengers should be allowed to use the lift to go straight to bus level or a new lift could be built at the Ringwood end of the platform which would go direct to the bus terminal.

To do that, You need to put another exit in (ie Barriers) which you've then gotta have someone working on...

What would make sense is to remove the Puffy stall and other little stallettes between the barriers and escalators... or remove the Escalators and put Travellators in which end a few metres from the barriers...

I have not the faintest idea about this sorta thing, but how often is your average shopping mall changed or rebuilt?

Given that Bock Heel Central is a good 15 years older than your average RP poster, wouldn't it be time that Centro (wot run the centre) refurbed it anyway?

Now wasn't Melbourne Central redone in the same vein..ie to enter or leave the station, people have to pass as many shops as possible.
