Is monorail a viable option for Northern Beaches

Pfffft! Never mind those Mosmanites. Wouldn't spit on their junction if it was on fire.

Expand the good old Cityrail network, I say. Extend the ESRL under the heads with stations at Rose Bay, Watsons Bay, Manly and on up to Mona Vale, maybe even Woy Woy.

The Mosmanites will just have to make do with my proposed underground light rail from there to Nth Sydney, Goat Island, Balmain and Rozelle Bay, with connections to the SLR.

You know it all makes sense!

Indeed it does, Oldfart! Roll on the ESCCRL (Eastern Suburbs - Central Coast Rail Link)!!

That's one of the more interesting ideas I've heard of in a while. It'd require some rejigging of the line being Central and BJ to be sure, but it could actually simplify things operationally:

Mortdale/Hurstville locals would run as far as Dee Why and turn around;

The balance of the suburban services would run express to there and run to Mona Vale or somewhere up that end. If you did extend over Broken Bay, you'd have the opportunity to through-run the interurbans as well if you rejigged/resignalled things in the city.

It'd necessitate the Erko sextuplication and possibly extra tracks Mortdale-Sutherland. (but these will be inevitable anyway).

If they are planning for the 21st century they probably should build the tunnels they were going to build a 100 years ago, a Northern beaches line could double as a tourist line like Byron Bay should be.

Hmmm, yes - a through Wyong-Wollongong service could be a possibility (although it would be a bit arduous on an Oscar). The only worry would be if such a service was at the expense of services via Hornsby and Strathfield - I daresay that it'd be a bit longer to the city via Bondi Junction.

Yeah with a capacity of 30 passengers and stuff with rechargable troll powered treadmills for nightime use and stuff and can be fully exported to non daylight countries and stuff.

Laughing What's even funnier, is I just remembered the one in the Simpsons was actually solar powered.
I wonder if it came from Germany as well  Rolling Eyes
Seriously but, why monorail? Your better off campaigning for heavy rail, its going to end up costing the same by the time you factor stuff like capacity etc.
Although a ESR connection sounds nice on paper, I don't think it is really do-able. You would end up killing the best thing about sector 1, which is its isolation. Further, isnt the eventual plan to get all intercity trains running from Central P25 to Wollongong in the future?

If anything will be done with the Eastern suburbs line it should be taken through Waverly, Randwick, UNSW/racecourse, maybe Maroubra, Botany then under Mascot stn and tunnelled through to terminate underneath the current Sydenham station. Mascot stn would have 2 underground levels for the airport link and the ES extension.

Hi Redaxe. A little bit of doubling back involved there, but reminiscent of Bradfield's originally proposed eastern suburbs line that was to go out from St James up under Oxford St, then split up to form a big loop serving the eastern suburbs. From St James the extra tracks running north would curve hard around to what are now the ESR platforms at Town Hall then continue out under Parramatta Rd to form a new western line. Meanwhile the tracks on the eastern side of the bridge were to swing across under the city and service out roughly where the airport line now runs.

For more recent real suggestions (as opposed to the products of imbalances in my medication posted above) have you seen the Christie Report diagram of the 'dream network' at http://www.aptnsw.org.au/christie/5.html  ?
  Redaxe Locomotive Driver

I haven't seen that report before but a lot of the ideas have been talked back and forth for ages. That is indeed the ideal network for what Sydney needs (new lines built that avoid the existing junctions that have different lines sharing the same track). I don't think I have seen a plan that thorough before though. That would take decades, probably 100 years to complete.

I only mentioned about extending the current Bondi Junction down to Randwick and towards Mascot and Sydenham because that is probably the easiest thing to do with what is already built - extending the existing network.

I think a lot of the problems with the m5 congestion could be alleviated with a proper eastern suburbs line that allows passengers coming in from the south and south west to get to UNSW, randwick, racecourse etc. Buying up the airport link would probably help too if a more reasonable surcharge was set.

But logistically if you compare the rates of monorail between Japan and Australia, Japan has more.

Last time I looked, 'More' does not equal 'everywhere'.

If people have a point to make about a particular technology then they should back it up with facts rather than make blanket unsubstantiated statements.

If you an your mates want to continue to live in some fantasy world then that is your prerogative.

Well, to be honest you should not start a flare up by saying 'Go Back playing with your Pokemon'. Seriously, you could of been a bit more formal than trying to mock others because you are a smart #rse.

I will not have a huge Argument with you as I feel it is POINTLESS to speak to a person who puts attitude to others.

Despite the semi-literate drivel seen in some of the more recent posts of this thread; there is no sense in a proposal for a Northern Beaches monorail.

Monorails are a example of niche technology which have nothing to offer in real transit situations.

Cheers,
Matt

Especially over the distance involved here. If you are going to do it, do it right. Put a boring machine in the ground under CBD, set the GPS for Manly then head nth via selected positions along the way, say Nth Sydney. Time frame over 10 years for full completion with partial openings along the way.

We don't need people to back up their mates when the mate is mocking others.

That's true. You DO have the right to an opinion. However, you DO NOT have the right not to have your point of view ripped apart. If someone else wants to provide their opinion to prove you wrong (heavens forbid), they can do how they want, and you are free to return the favour, and the consequence, or lack of, is at the discretion of the moderators. If he wants to say you are a 'pokemon player' you, at your own will, can in turn attempt to counter his arguement and call him and old f@rt or whatever you may think of him.

In turn, someone else may decide they have the same opinion and support Bing's arguement, because they've been convinced. Now all you need is somebody convinced enough to support you.

My 1/2penny's worth.
