Valley Heights Museum

Over the Queens Birthday weekend, considerable work is to be undertaken by RailCorp to re-habilitate the old coal siding and associated points so that locomotives and the steam tram have a much longer run past the road overbridge to up beside the Valley Heights RailCorp Business Office and Depot.

Work probably being done on account of ORH NSW. This work will also advantage the museum by making their running days more visible to the travelling public on the Great Western Highway. All in all a great gain for the museum.

I think you'll find it's Railcorp undertaking the work and what you have mentioned is being done is not correct

Not sure where you sourced that from

There are actually 2 projects underway. The old D frame and associated points are being removed and the turnout from the relief line to the coal storage siding is being replaced with a new turnout and catch points. This is directly from this weeks Weekly Notices No 22 and is being done on account of RailCorp. The work further east re-the rehab of the coal storage siding etc is being done to increase the running capability of the Museum. This was told to me by a representative of the museum this week. I cannot see what benefit it would be to RailCorp to re-new the coal siding up past Valley Heights Business Office.

You are half correct. Frame D and its release switch plus signals are being removed, thereby taking away the connection into the museum.

At the same time 113 points, from the down refuge to the down main at the Springwood end of the Refuge are being replaced, and a new catchpoint installed at the up end of the refuge.

It's easy to see how that can be misinterpreted into the original post, that's the internet for you! Shocked

So does mean that the museum will have no connection to the main line at all?

it basically means that the connection will be at the up end of the yard from the down main to refuge then to coal
  Throughwestmail Train Controller

It means that for the present time there will be NO connection in or out of the museum.

Incorrect. After the weekend work there is still a connection into the museum but through the restored crossover from coal to the storage Sydney end and then storage to relief to main at western end. Track machine operator commented to me today that a lot of money had been spent mainly for the benefit of the museum. He also mentioned how bad it was working in the rain over the weekend.

From obsevations over the weekend it appears the tramway group will gain only 150 metres of line past the overbridge at Valley Heights Station.
Do they have plans to reinstate  the siding  that ran east  to near Waratah St ? That would give them another 1000m.

I was told they were going to get more than the 150 metres but it may not happen straight away. more on a basis when a crew and resources are free. No instruction have appeared so far about the new arrangements. Nothing in this weeks Weekly Notices. The existing track diagrams are all wrong now anyhow.

as far as i know they will only be running to the signal box as they are now ,but i could be wrong.

They'll have to be ready to allow the 36 + train into the depot on Saturday.  That's probably why.

I will be passing Valley Heights again on Friday morning and check out the works. Would be a good run for them if they manage to reinstate that 1000m siding in the future towards Waratah St. There looks to be only a couple of obstacles in the way

Today, new ballast down and rolled. New s/h railed pulled into position beside ROW and will check tomorrow if they are attacking the great pile of second hand concrete sleepers stacked next to the old signal box. Not sure whether they are going to use the s/h turnout concrete sleepers or the timber ones under the turn outs. But all easily finished by Friday PM and ready for Saturday's Feral Fest choo choo to Katoomba.

Yep, Thursday morning. concrete sleepers down, rail in place but not anchored and ballast being spread by front end loader. Last I saw was crew were about to join rail to the turnout so I guess it will be ready for Saturday.

Bit of a cheer went up from the crew today as they appeared to have mostly completed the work. The newly laid siding is still a bit uneven, but probably OK for a light loco, unless a tamper is run over before tomorrow. Congrats all round for job well done.

I seen today that 670/770 wasn't stored in their  usual siding, did they get moved inside the new sheds? Or have they moved to somewhere else?

Thanks Guys, I knew it that they would end up being scrapped anyways, just wasn't sure if it happened or not

No doubt that 5711 is still awaiting restoration, the volunteers gathering all the money together via donations to make the resto happen.
