Moe -Earthquake appeal - Terrifying tremors and icy cold temperatures hit Moe tonight,

Victims were seen wandering around aimlessly, flannies frozen, trackies sagging,
muttering 'Faaackinell'.

The tremors devastated the area causing approximately $30 worth of damage.
... ...
Three areas of historic burnt out cars were disturbed. Many locals were woken well before their Centrelink cheques arriv...ed.

The Moe Times reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered and were still trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting had happened in Waterloo Rd.

One resident - Tracy Maree Sharon Britney Madonna Skye-Smith, a 15-year-old mother of 5 said 'It was such a shock, my little daughter Chardonnay-Mercedes came running in to my bedroom crying. My youngest two Joachim and River slept through it all.' The windows shook and the bed vibrated” I don’t have to steal D size batteries out of the kids toys tonight”

Apparently, looting, muggings and car crime were unaffected and carried on as normal.

The Australian Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Bacardi-Breezers to the area to help the stricken locals. Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal belongings, including Health Care Cards, Jewellery from Kmart and Bone China from Big W.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

This appeal is to raise money for food and clothing parcels for those unfortunate enough to be caught up in this disaster. Clothing is most sought after - items most needed include: flannelette Shirts, tight blue jeans or spandex, singlets (blue & white) white sport socks, Ugg boots, hoodies and any other items usually sold in Priceline or The Reject Shop.

Food parcels may be harder to come by, but are needed all the same.
Required foodstuffs urgently needed include: Microwave meals, Baked Beans, Ice cream, Sarah Lee Frozen Cheesecakes, Chips, all Fizzy drinks, Wagon Wheels, Tim Tams, Coco Pops and Fruit Loops. No Diet Coke
Donations of $25.00 will be taken to buy a packet of Winny blue 25s and a lighter and cans of Jim Beam to calm the nerves of those affected

Luckily it was only very minor with minimal damage. But I can understand that these things can cetainly be of concern to many people. I think there was a similar one in the Adelaide Hills last year.

Sky News are saying that Geoscience Australia (whose website appears to have crashed!!!) are now saying it was 5.5

By Comparison, the 1989 Newcastle Earthquake - which killed 13 - was 5.6

I heard the explanation of that. The M5.5 and 5.6 reports came from an automatic monitoring station that sends the report on to emergency services in the area (presumably so that they have early warning of what to expect). The M5.2 figure is the accurate figure as determined by the duty seismologist who took in data from multiple places and made manual calculations to estimate the corrected figure.

An oldie but a goodie.

Some of it is missing though. It went something along the lines of, "Please don't send tents for emergency accommodation because the sight of posh housing might upset the locals whose houses are still intact," or similar.

There were three yesterday.  First was a 2.7 at about 14:42, the bigger one at 7:11 and another little one followed it just after that.

The whole place has been pretty active from just before the big one last month.  Most have been centred at Thorpdale/Glenburn but one was under Moe and another just to the north toward Moondara.

Seismic activity of reportable significance have returned to the area lately, with minor tremors in the same old area south of Moe, and also further afield near Drouin and Leongatha, and also at Mt Baw Baw.

No doubt all of the above can be attributed to the main shock in June, just as the tremors in the weeks afterwards were.

Slightly unrelated, but I saw an ad on Youtube recently where a pack of Windfields was 40c.
