Question about Poster's rankings

My progress with computers is very slow, I bought Vista For Dummies but don't know what the author is talking about.

I am proud of myself this week though - I figured out how to use Emoticons (during typing, not after) and I found the list of Rankings.

However I notice some Posters have rankings, eg. Lithgovian Ambassador-at-Large and The Snow Lord, not on the list.

Are they special people, like, part of an Inner Sanctum or something?.

Would someone be good enough to enlighten me about this?.

Thank you,
Kent.

Are you talking about the stars or the rankings that look like jobs?

Some of them are a result of this thread from 2007.

Here is the "official" list of the rankings:

1 post - Beginner

10 posts - Station Staff

20 - Station Master

50 - Locomotive Fireman

75 - Locomotive Driver

100 - Junior Train Controller

200 - Train Controller

300 - Chief Train Controller

500 - Assistant Commissioner

700 - Deputy Commissioner

1000 - Chief Commissioner

5000 - Minister for Railways

10000 - The Ghost of George Stephenson

15000(?) - Dr Beeching

20000 - Sir Nigel Gresley

However some of the elder statesmen of the forum have unique and personalised rankings, to get one of those you really need to be here for years. Usually Admins and Moderators have these (or simply "Site Admin" or "Moderator") but only these people, or as I said the elite members on here (users who literally have been here forever), have unique rankings, such as the ones you mentioned.

As for the medals/stars under your username, I don't think anyone knows what they are for.

In 20 years time I will apply for the rank Harold Young, who designed the 38 class. I have something in common with his overworked firemen - no sex.

Don't those who are friends of the Admins and Moderators get special ranks?

Nope. Im friends with a few admins and moderators, but when we come to RP, I am a normal member and am under the same rules as everyone else. I dont get any special treatment due to being friends with them, and its better that way as it keeps everything fair for everyone.

Special ranks were assigned during a special season. Everyone else gets bog-standard post-count-derived ranks, unlike other forums where a member can be assigned to a member group, self-assign a title and have a post-count-derived rank. For example, there is a forum I'm a member of where I'm the only member of the "TRAINer" group, have the self-assigned title of "Resident 'I Like Trains' Kid" and currently hold the post-count-derived rank of Rising Star.

It does get pretty funny when there's a thread consisting purely of Chief Commissioners.

Absolutely not.
I am neither family or friend of anyone in a position of power here, yet I was able to  a request a change in rank name.

Why not try PMing admin with a nicely worded rank name change request and see how you go.

Pro tip: dredging up a four year old thread for the lols is frowned upon. If you really have to comment on such an old thread, make it worth our while to read it.
