I like the photo on the flyer of a train at Creswick. I could swear I was actually on that train at the time - it was a Tom Murray weekend trip to Talbot (via Oaklands)!!!

T320 has been pranged by a rogue tree.  SRHC seems to have repairs under control, and there are still 5 weeks to go. Here's hoping it's ready.

It was mountaineering on a rather tight budget...

Thanks for your posting Loco & hopefull booking,  the mainline operation with preserved diesel locomotives on a long day from go to woe may not be the be all and end all and some peoples idea of a fun day out with even wannabe  bookmakers positng odds on the on time performance of the train in the recent Steamrail Tocumwal  Tour topic.

Unfortunately yes the 707 trip to Donald is a very long day from Melbourne, and once the train leaves Newport the train is in the hands of  Metro, V/Line , ARTC and others,  it aint the Victorian Railways and 1964 , where at 4.12 pm on a Friday arvo you could ring up and book a special train for Saturday morning to the extremeties of the network , as used to be the case,  it is 2013 and there are far too many stakeholders with their fingers in the pie that see the operation of heritage trains on the mainline network as a hinderance to the ever efficient operation  of the rail network that is witnessed every day of the year by the customers of Metro, V/Line and the ARTC.

Once again I call on all railfans to support the operation of mainline heritage and purchase a ticket to travel on the train on the 20th April.  Without this support, mainline heritage train operation will also become a fading memory..... and a thing of the past.

It appears I'll be lucky enough to be in MEL on Sat. 20/4, however, prior engagements that evening, prohibit me from riding the tour all the way to Donald & return, so I was wondering is there any way one could contribute by means of purchasing a one way ticket, to ride: MEL - Ballarat (Via Nth Shore)???

I had looked at the option of going thru to Marybough, but on checking the V/Line Website, sadly there's no returning V/Line Coach / Train connection workable for return to MEL around the time the train arrives / departs Marybough Nth Bound to Donald, so I'll just have to be content with MEL - Ballarat (Via Nth Shore) one - way, if it can be done...

The train bookings are going very well, although plenty of room is still available ex Melbourne, The locals from Creswick, Clunes and Maryborough have really embraced the opportinity to travel to Donald for the 150th Celebrations.

A 9 car train will run , with T 413 & T 320. The consist is PCP 294  - ACZ 255 - BZ 270 - BRS 224 - BS 205 - BS 212- 708 - JTA 6 - SJ 284, and will roughly represent the consist that operated on the former Vinelander train that ran on the line.

707 Operations  Volunteer work should see ACZ 255 on its first outing in red livery, BS 205 & B 212 which remain in former WCR livery , with both cars having remedial restoration work undertaken.  Subject to V/Line Certification SJ 284 will make its first  appearance on the mainline since the cessation of the Vinelander in 1993.

Bookings are still open at http://www.707operations.com.au or Phone  0403 883 424 to secure a seat.

A Quick thank you to all whom have purchased tickets and are travelling on the train on Saturday.  The train has received great response from Government, and the local communities along the way with many passengers traveling from Melbourne ,  Ballarat, & Maryborough to Donald for the day as well, to add to this bookings from Clunes have been outstanding with very strong local support, with present train capacity almost reached.  There are at this stage 320 passengers on the train on arrival in Donald !!

Trip ran well on all accounts.
On Time running was established on most of the down trip, a late running VLP and Signal Fault, in combination with a Temp Speed Restriction between Maryborough and Dunolly caused a slightly behind time arrival at Donald.

Departure from Donald on time but a un scheduled stop for wildlife and again the TSR forced the train behind time. A longer than usual stop at Clunes to allow most of the Country Travelling passengers to alight men't the train arrived at Ballarat slighty further behind and men't an altered cross with the Down pass.

Appart from that the trip went of without a hitch and everyone I managed to thank said they really enjoyed themselves.

Out of interest, even though I couldn't make it out to see it due to illness, what time (approx) did it venture through Melton on the Down?

I believe it was routed via Gheringhap on the Down, so would have visited Melton only on the Up.

Melton was reached just short of 1000 on the down. 1010 we departed after crossing the up pass.

The train was men't to run via nth Geelong on the down but occupations put a stop to that.

What was the reason for the TSR between Maryborough and Dunolly?  Was it because of the dual gauge or sleeper condition?

Thank you to the organisers and travellers on this trip.   Hope you enjoyed the hospitality of Donald on your short stay.   As you saw, a big crowd of locals was waiting at the Donald station for the train's arrival.   It's good to see a great response to this trip.

Cheers

I got it at Maryborough and Dunolly. Would have chased it further but I had work that night.
