G536-G537 taken of MC2/CM3 services will go to PN Rural & Bulk most likely to do the Mineral Sands

This is doing the rounds at the present time.  I had heard this rumour previously but did not have any idea about the loco's or the date the service would change over potentially.

If true it would appear that El Zorro may have lost the mineral sands traffic to and from Hamilton?

Brian/All,

Can confirm from other circles that it appears as if El Zorro have lost the mineral sands contract to PN, with a pair of BL/G/81 class to be used for the horses. Supposedly the traffic will also ramp up, longer heavier trains. Unsure if the current CFCLA CHBY hoppers will continue to be used, or if PN will use different rolling stock. I've been told that the CHBY hoppers are very heavy for what they are, so perhaps a lighter hopper would be more efficient?

Thanks for the updates.

This raises some interesting questions.  Will ELZ vacate the sections of Hamilton railway station they currently occupy?

How will PN crew the services?  Will we see a PN depot at Hamilton or will they run crews out of Portland?

How many new services are we talking about?

I would suggest it is likely that they would vacate any offices/barracks they have there if they're not using it.

I imagine that the crewing would be done in a similar way to El Zorro. This seems to be the consensus elsewhere that I've read this discussion.

I don't know about new services, my understanding was longer trains.

The people contracting the service would get someone else to run it.

Interesting on traffic ramping up given that the sands company has actually announced that it has cut production across all of its operations and the refinery is working one month on/ one month off. Its production figures confirm this as well.

I don't think they'd be likely to do that, as they went out and chased the traffic. They would have done the numbers before bidding on it.

Perhaps PN are in a better position to serve the contract with longer, heavier trains running less often.

My information is from forums and magazines so in other words I have no inside information.
El Zorro picked up this new work when it was transferred from Road to Rail using leased hoppers that were modified for this traffic.
The Locomotives used were not new by a long shot however once again quoting threads they did not seem to suffer any more failures than normal.
If PN use G,s, 81,s or BL,s they are not much younger than L 277 and C 501. There mechanical state maybe somewhat better but broadly they will not be significantly more reliable, they have also been around for thirty years.
The hoppers in use are covered with some PVC type material so if PN are to use their own hoppers, what hoppers? PN scrapped a lot of covered Cement/Fertilizer hoppers in Geelong several years ago?
The every second month operation announced by the Factory would not help El Zorro as their crews based in Western Victoria would not have other work to go to in the area as PN crews would be able to.
Bad luck for ELZ as this was new regular traffic or so it seemed until production was reduced at Hamilton.
People must know without telling all of the Company secrets.
So what I am asking is what has happened and why the change?
Regards PTE.
