What Suburban stations did AN stop at in the 70s & 80s?

    Location: In a FAM sleeper
    I was just curious as to what if any suburban stations in Adelaide Australian National passenger trains stopped at in the 1970s and the 1980s besides Keswick Terminal (which isn't a suburban station)?

    The Overland did stop - at least on request - at Blackwood.  I also travelled to Goolwa and return from Blackwood on the Victor Harbor train in the late seventies.

    I better add "Hilra", adjacent to Baxters Road on the Pirie track was also a conditional stop for Pirie passengers I think I stopped there once, also recall that there was a daily service to Virginia by suburban cars til at least 1980.

    I better add "Hilra", adjacent to Baxters Road on the Pirie track was also a conditional stop for Pirie passengers I think I stopped there once, also recall that there was a daily service to Virginia by suburban cars til at least 1980.

    Hilra was the first station on the old Penfield line Alcoworldseries there was never to my knowledge any form of stopping place on the Pt Pirie line opposite that station. The Penfield line was totally away from the Pt Pirie line at that point, close enough to see, it but not connected to it.

    "Hilra" in inverted comma's David I recall a conditional stopping board immediately on the Salisbury side of Baxter Road in BG days, I recall stopping there at least once on the evening passenger one night.

    Hilra was always a wooden step down platform on both lines, Penfield and the Pirie line.

    I only actually used the Penfield line for a few weeks in April/May 1982 but have traveled daily out that way ever since. I would not have said Hilra was "immediately on the Salisbury side of Baxter Road" (Sic - its Bagster Road) as Alcoworldseries recalls.  My recollection of Hilra was that it was much closer to the divergence of the Pirie, Penfield and Gawler lines.

    Looking at Google Maps satellite view, there seems to be a concrete slab alongside the SG line adjacent to Salisbury High School.  Could that have been the location of steps at Hilra?

    Does anyone know exactly when the Port Pirie line standardisation commenced and completed.  I can recall from my work window during 1982 being able see past the Penfield line to the Pirie line but can't recall what guage it was at the time.

    Hilra was a yard with a step down platform the station was at the North Western end of this yard from memory, it was just before the curve into the WRE proper. It also had locomotive facilty's as well, a water tank mainly and I think a small pit, not sure about the pit though. It was a good distance from the divergence of the other lines. This line to Penfield separated from the North Line with a double line junction at what used to be called Penfield Junction this junction used to be controlled by a tiny Signal cabin that had only 6 or 8 levers in it from memory. Part of this Junction still exists it is used as a siding from Salisbury Station for railcars and track machines.

    Hilra was much closer to Bagsters Road than Salisbury High School.
    Looking at a map, it was approximately halfway between Stratford Rd and Compton St. adjacent to Langford Tce.

    Actually, no.  It wasn't.

    Hilra was on the Penfield line only, located east of the old north triangle leg to the Gawler line - Yes; Penfield Junction was a triangle (Purling Avenue runs parallel and to the west of the alignment - the old signal base is still in existance, as was, until recently, the footings for the old signal cabin at the site).

    If you've got Google, Playford Crescent runs approximately down the alignment of the old Penfield line.  

    Hilra was at approximately 34º 44' 57" S 13º 38' 23.7"E, almost directly across from Straford Road, Salisbury North.

    There WERE provisional stops available to passengers on Port Pirie trains, at Bagsters Road, near the "Woomera Stores" adjacent to the corner of Camira Way and Mooronga Street, Salisbury North, and at Bolivar Road.  The collision between the Bluebird Railcar and the car carrier full of Holden Commodores (I'm sure you remember that one Malcom?) cleaned up that particular sign.  There were several others between Salisbury and Mallala, including (I think) Taylors Road, Gawler River Road, Dawkins Road, and Pratt Road.  There were certainly others including one at Gallipoli Road.
