Well I guess if you got that email you got on the list. Funny coz the info sessions were meant to mandatory. Have you done it before??  Also you receive a similar email a couple of days after the info days. Perhaps your résumé looks fancy and they really want you.

Although your email reads a little as if your not on the list, even though it says there you are. Not sure about that one!!

Oh - there must be two merit lists then lol... I was not invited to an information session, but have an email saying I'm on the merit list..extract from my email - "...requiring more Trainee Driver positions to be filled, we may access the merit list, of which you are part of. If that occurs we will contact you well in advance of any invitation for you to take part in a re-invigorated recruitment campaign."

What fraction of right is everyone at now?  Smile
Devonstern

There is one merit list.

You just got lucky somehow.
The only thing that matters is getting that phone call.

I was also advised by an insider that if you are on the Merit List you will definitely get a phone call, but it could be anytime between now and the end of 2014.

Ha ha.  That was tongue in cheek Michy! I know there is one merit list.
There is no luck occuring here, 'cause I wont be seeing any assessment centres in the near future!
What I reckon is - there is a difference between a "merit list" and a shortlist of applicants to draw upon for future assessment centres.
The former will be called if the latter all attend a centre, and the business requirements have not been met.  This scenario is highly unlikely, which was clearly explained to me in my email, thus the "no luck occuring here" statement.
They have calculated how many applicants should be required for all the assessment centres required to recruit the right amount of staff, and I fall outside that range, but not outside the boundaries for the merit list, which I understood to be around the top 300 of overall applicants.

I was just sayin' - invitation to an information session did not equate to being on merit list, it was above and beyond that.

Good luck to all..

Shall we start a new thread......this one has been dragged far enough already............and not much interesting happening anymore..........

Sorry mate,
I didn't want to come off like a grumpy cow, but there are few people that read this forum and get confused, which would have caused panic - thinking there is another merit list etc... and then we would have all been frustrated by the constant silly questions ha ha.

Well I hope you do have a shot at an assessment centre, and hopefully we get the phone calls soon Smile

I was hoping to find out before my project was up, so I would know if I needed to go to a new project or not.

Oh well, all you can do is wait by the phone and get REALLY frustrated when it's telemarketers and not Metro! ha ha

you could be correct with your guess. who really knows for sure. It could add up, at no stage have they said that the merit list was limited to those who were lucky enough to attend an info session, however it that is what was inferred on the day.

But Metro will be the only people who know for sure!!

This interests me winnie. Your insider must know something mine doesn't. I was told that it could be a very long wait until they progress after the next couple of courses start, due to some major problems that have surfaced with the current training regime they are undertaking.

I heard the same as you mrbump.

And I was also informed by a newly trained driver that he applied in the February (obviously not this year) and got through all the testing and information session.
Once on the merit list, he got his phone call in late June for a spot in a course and is now Driving full time - although his course was the 73 week straight one, not the newly revised.

So there is still hope yet! Smile yayyyyy

So he has done all the testing, and the information session - but the assessment center? So he got the call to attend the assessment center and thereon, the other checks and got the job. How long from information session to assessment center, and to course start?

You can be waiting months for a call to attend an assessment center,
and if you do make it through, the course will usually be a few months start after that as well.

A driver I spoke to told me that he had applied in Feb, got through to the merit list and then got a phone call in June to attend the assessment center and then started the course a few months later.

Its all just speculation.

You're not a train driver until Metro tell you, you are. Just because you make it through to the training doesn't guarantee you a job. I was told the course is much harder than any university course and it will be the hardest thing you ever do.  This came from a current train driver who also has a uni degree.

It's not hard if you listen to the trainers, both in the classroom and on the job. They have experience. Study when you can. What you learn on week 1, you'll still need to remember in week 40.

Being a train driver isn't about being an intellectual, it’s about being able to make the safest decision quickly and correctly. From the 3 drivers I know (2 of which are on the job trainers) it isn't rocket science, nor is it brain surgery. It is however, a lot to remember.

If the new training regime stays in effect, this amount to remember is broken up, as you only learn two traction systems, and about half of the metro network in 73 weeks. after that there is a further 6 months to get up to scratch with the whole network and the remainder of the traction systems, which in theory makes its somewhat easier...

It's not the hardest thing you'll ever do. Just apply yourself properly and give it your full attention and you'll be fine. Hardest thing is making it through the filter at the beginning.

If you tell yourself that you can't do something or that something is hard, you'll prove yourself right every time.

Contract signed, ready and excited to start work in July. Anyone here started in the May class? I was very surprised to read that we need to dress in 'business wear'. Is this just for the first 18 weeks? Anyone know?

Until you get issued your uniform. However long that may be.

Thanks. That helps a lot. I don't have any 'business wear' so I'll just buy a little to tide me over.

Uniforms are issued on the first day, so don't buy too much...
