This article was added to the Railpage system on 1 November 2004.  How times have changed not.  Would be great to see steam on the range regularly

It was a beautiful loco, too.  I had a cab ride courtesy of "Wheelslip" the (ex Victorian ) driver, and it was very good. I wonder what's happened to it.

It is still at the CKS depot at Edge Hill. Work on it is progressing slowly...

Have to wonder what sort of work? I thought the service was canned due to lack of numbers? Was there also an issue with the loco?

Who is paying for this ongoing work? Must be very patient owner to have a loco sitting there for nearly 10 years earning zero income and costing money along the way. I know they lost a few SX cars due to fire. Surely there is a market for local steam trips in the Carins area that could generate a positive cash flow?

I can't speak for CKS, but I am lead to believe that the steamer may be used for trips on the NCL Cairns - Innisfail and perhaps elsewhere. I don't recall the loss of SX cars due to fire, but you may be correct. There has been no rush to get the steamer back on the rails as CKS are concentrating their efforts on the Savannahlander and putting their 11 class locos to work earning money.

Boiler, overhaul all auxiliaries, re lag, re clad plus numerous other tasks on a relatively complicated piece of machinery. Done by one bloke. Serious efforts only really got going twelve months ago.

Yes it was, no there wasn't

Some income earned by the company is drip fed to the project. Yes he is, but it's not costing him anything.

I know they lost a few SX cars due to fire.

That was before the organisation was operational, in fact coming up for 10 years ago.

It is precisely that marketing assumption that nearly bankrupted the company. A couple of local trips does not pay the $250M insurance, access or other fixed operational costs. Non revenue re-commissioning trials at some undetermined future date will be quite rewarding for the staff, but questions remain as to the viability of revenue work. Highly doubtful that there will ever be revenue runs on the Kuranda Range, which in any case is well served by the KSR.
