Hi all,

I met my boyfriend on a Central to Lithgow train and I'm wanting to get him a model train for our anniversary and I cannot for the life of me find one. I guess it's because I've never bought a model train before and therefore have no idea what I'm actually looking for but if anyone can help me please! Our anniversary is coming up pretty soon. =

Hi MarraJane,

Far too many variables.....like scale, era, prototype etc

Perhaps a Gift Voucher from one of the following shops might be the safest bet.

Try asking some questions in a roundabout way as to what he is modelling, what he would like, what scale he model's in etc, what era he is modelling, but ask a bit at a time to just make it look like you are interested and mentally note the answers, or even write them done so he cannot see them. Then you can go into a hobby shop and get him something he really wants and can use. But if it was me I would be grateful to you even if I modelled in G scale and you bought a N scale model because you thought it was cute or something.

Another idea. Take a photo or two of something in his collection. Post it here on the forum, I'm sure we could help what it is he models.

There are assumptions being made here.  How do we know that the lucky man is a modeller at all?  Maybe it's just a model as a reminder of their meeting place.

In that case the scale does not matter, the era is 2012.

So are there any models of current stock used on services to Lithgow?  If so is it the right one (someone needs to put up link)?  Finally where does Marrajane buy it?

MarraJane,

To the best of my knowledge there is no model of the electric rolling stock that you probably met on currently available however you could get a 'U Boat' which was the older stock that used to operate this service.  These used to run from Central to Lithgow (amongst other places).  There were also several named services on this route including "The Fish" and "The Chips" which were operated by U Boats for many years.  You may have even been traveling on the Fish or the Chips when you met without knowing it!

Model U Boats are made by Southern Rail Models and can be viewed at http://www.southernrailmodels.com.au/page/u_boat.html

Alternatively services from Bathurst to Central are operated by Endeavour DMUs.  These services are operated by Lithgow staff and are colloquially known as 'the Bathurst Bullet'.

Model Endeavours are also made by Southern Rail Models, details are available  at http://www.southernrailmodels.com.au/files//product_info/xplorer__endeavour.pdf

Perhaps you could travel on the Bathurst Bullet as an anniversary date?

(I have no connection with Southern Rail Models.)

Good luck and happy anniversary!

You dont really need to look for anything Australian for a first purchase of a model train, they are visually uninteresting and overly expensive anyway .
Your boyfriend would probably appreciate the novelty of something in this range from  the Bachmann Starter Sets. Easy to put together and maintain.
