Diamond Creek? Question

  duttonbay Minister for Railways

Neither Keon Park nor Diamond Creek (where surely levers operated signals)

Let's have a fourth clue:

This station has never had a signal box
Even without a signal box there were still levers
The levers did not operate signals
For many years the adjacent level crossing had hand operated gates

Incorrect Guesses: Richmond, Burwood,  Williston, South Kensington, Cardinia Rd, Lyndhurst, Heathmont, Baxter, Hawthorn, Waverley Rd, Armadale, Keon Park, Diamond Creek

24 hours without a response. Let's add more:

For many years the adjacent level crossing had hand operated gates
the station has an island platform

Hughesdale
"retromelb"

Hughesdale it is. Never had a signal box, despite being the point of divergence of the Outer Circle (and near enough to the Rosstown Junction railway). Levers were in the gatekeeper's cabin to operate the pedestrian gates,

Over to retromelb now.

Cheers duttonbay.

I'll take a punt on Glen Eira Road, Ripponlea.  Not certain when the track was lowered and the booms removed, but it might have been in 1963.

"retromelb"

Yes, I remembered that at 4am! I was thinking of Glenhuntly Rd, Elsternwick, and the grade separation.
I have no further guesses - I can't think of any boom barriers removed prior to July 1963.

Moorabbin?

Graham ?

Spot on Valvegear.  Moorabbin is correct - the level crossing in question was for the Nepean Highway.  For a short time before the lines went under, boom barriers had replaced the interlocked gates.  May have been a couple of years, but not sure how long.
  duttonbay Minister for Railways

The crossing at Moorabbin involved temporary booms, provided to facilitate grade separation. They were installed in Jan 58, presumably on a deviation of the road being grade separated to allow the bridge to be built on the original alignment.  The grade separation was completed, and the temporary crossing removed in December the same year.

I must admit I didn't consider temporary crossings - that was a good question.

Good question, indeed; thanks retromelb. . . . to continue the "ancient history" theme:-

More than 50 years ago, a pedestrian access bridge was replaced.
