Was S54 and S72 sent to Chullora to fill up the remaining road there?

I'm afraid that C3857, the last painted car delivered, will not be preserved.

How do we know though if it was sent to Chullora or sent to back to service? That's why I asked. 3741 and 4987 also made great candidates, but they met the scrappers attention very early on.

Speaking bluntly, I don't feel this is reason enough to preserve it. As long as a decent representation of the train type is retained for enthusiast tours and/or museum display, this is enough. Can't save everything, sadly.

S88 is currently stored at UGL Unipart Auburn with 4126. Once approval is given I will be stripping every last bit out of it. Only a shell will be loco hauled to Chullora for its last rostered job. S45 is due out next week ex HEAVY CCO and S151 will he next for heavy CCO, rumour is it is the last one to be overhauled but that story changes every other day.

I only think a max of 4-8 cars should be well enough for future tours etc. Any more than that would be hard to maintain (i.e looking after, storage etc). And the NSWRTM have 3045-4310-3804. So I doubt they'll be acquiring one.

Anyway back on topic .....

Per preservation group? HET, and SETS should acquire 8 and 4 cars respectively.

Ummm ... Well then that means S54 and S72 are put back. Unless you've mistaken 3857 for another car. I doubt the two sets returned to service due to the fact that Chullora still has a spare road. :S

No in general. I'd personally like to see a larger number preserved, however, the cost of maintaining them would be quite high (Restorations etc). If need be, to have an operational set, only have 4-6 car for the same reasons stated above. Just my opinion.

Why? Where does all the money come from to buy, house and maintain, not just these trains, but also all of the past and future trains that also "need" to be saved? Given your urge to spend money that simply doesn't exist, I'm sure you'd advocate preserving a K, C, T and G set in the near future too?

As long as one four-car S Set is preserved, that's enough. Heritage in NSW is hardly big money, and there is only a finite amount of it going around.

Agreed 100%. We simply don't have enough $$$ to purchase a large amount. And even if we did, I don't think anyone would be bothered to clean out, refurbish, do whatever to x amount of carriages everyday.

Just remember, just because SETS, HET, any other preservation society, are focused on the future of withdrawing rolling stock, doesn't mean they get paid $1,000,000 every week and have plenty of space to store x amount of cars + cleaning them out, refurbishing them etc.  It doesn't happen.    I'm sure you wouldn't want to wake up everyday-go to school/work-come back home tired and having to refurbish a dozen or so carriages every day.. Sorry if this sounds offensive, but we need to stop using these preservation societies as excuses to preserve an unrealistic number of cars. They can't preserve our favourite car from every generation of rolling stock. Anyway lets get back on topic and not drag threads OT.

Anyway,  what's happened to S54 and S72? Have they been returned to service (just asking again because of CMTheTrainGeek's observation that he travelled on 3857) or have they been sent to Chullora?

And thanks to 244hseriesalco for the info of S88 at Maintrain. Smile

Thanks. Smile I have had a few that are impressed with my list. I'm glad you like it. Smile I gather sources from different sites, and bunch it up into one. Because I actually live in Rockingham, Perth. So these aren't my sightings. I just place them in a list. Smile

Just my opinion.

it was S72, it was its last run on the northern line IIRC

Ok, however, S72 WAS withdrawn in May 2013, which was 3 months ago, which leads me to believe you're not telling the truth, As you said:

i travelled on C3857 today...
"CMTheTrainGeek's post from August 4th 2013"

That's impossible as the set was retired 3 months ago in the following consist - S72: 3809-4977-4932-3857. The only way that observation would be possible is if the set was returned to service, however, it was transferred to Chullora between 25/7-2/8. Surely on the 4th August, it was already at Chullora.

And the original S72 (3810-4987-4130-3064) was broken down multiple times between December 2012 till the lead up of its withdrawal. 3810-4987 (S72) were swapped for 3939-4932 (S95). 3810 (Ex S72) - 4987 (Ex S72) -4711 (S95) - 3974 (S95) were withdrawn in December 2012 as set S95, with S67: 3863-4083-4963-3868-3810-4987-4711-3974 and was subsequently scrapped in June 2013. S72 remained as the following: 3939-4932-4130-3064. In May the following happened: 3939 was swapped with 3857 from S53, 4130-3064 were replaced by 4977-3809 from S98. 4932 was untouched. This created the following:

S98 - 3052-4936 (both cars are S98 ) -4130-3064 (Ex S72 - both cars)
S53 - 3888-4048-4133 (all 3 cars are S53) -3939 (Ex S72)

And S72 as explained above.

And one last thing:

it was S72, it was its last run on the northern line IIRC

I'm not to entirely sure what you mean by this. May you please elaborate further, as it will help me and the rest of us to understand you.

I'm not having a go at you, however I am stating that your observation maybe a little false.

yep ok, probably misplaced target plates, Naughty staff! Ok, i was at central, going to milsons point when an s set appeared, its target plates read S72, so i boarded, sat down, and noticed that it carriage number was C3857. thats all i remember, except for pushing on the 26/27 doors and to my suprise, they opened! not locked at all!

Ok then. I'll dismiss my argument from here onwards. Anyway, lets get back on topic.

And in response to your next post, I'm 15. Not that much older than you.

I totally agree that it COULD be wrong, but i am quite sure it was 3857. i wish i had photos, but the one day i dont take photos, something weird happens! Very Happy

There WAS a FMC set running on the shore the other day (likely it was originally a standby train at FMC or Olympic Park, or it was a FMC -> HMC transfer without being re-targeted). That's about all I can confirm though, I don't check car numbers, sorry!
