Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know when the 2 Monorail carriages and the 10 meters of Monorail track are being put into the PowerHouse Museum?

I'm sorry that it's not running. I have just been in Sydney for a week, which I do three or four times a year, and it's the first time that I was not able to get on the Monorail in Pitt Street, and off at Paddys Market for the 200 metre walk to my hotel. It suited me fine.

I can't work the monorail out, didn't they spend millions on putting it in to relieve transport congestion?
What is it being replaced by?
  3l diesel

I think you will find that the monorail was a fantasmogorical form of futuristic transport that was just so far out there. I recall a recent Sydney Morning Herald artcle which was rather blunt in its assessment that it was the product of the  then Premier, Neville Wran's and Darling Harbour Development Minister Laurie Breteton's autocratic decision making. A light rail system, was suggested and fought for but Wran made his own mind up on the matter.

The Monorail is being taken down in order to allow an extension to Sydney's Light Rail System.

Was it really that bad (apart from that predictable political association Rolling Eyes).

I recall that there was a lot of resistance to Light Rail due to the disruption to traffic during building and operation. The current light rail didn't exist and that same resistance prevented it being extended (by both politico sides) into the city proper.

Since then there is the cross city tunnel etc relieving the amount of traffic funnelling through that corridor so no excuses for not putting down LR.

Like a large portion of the PHM collection, it will probably sit in the warehouse at Castle Hill for the next umpteen years. Don't expect it to show up at Ultimo any time soon.

The Castle Hill site is regularly open to the public, once they have the thing properly catalogued and stored, monorail fans may be able to organise visits Smile

Museums are like icebergs, what you see on display is usually only a small portion of the total collection.

The monorail wasn't really in the way of any LR extension. What it did need however was an almost total rebuild. The Von Roll trains were clapped out. The monorail itself needed work.
A significant amount of money would have been needed to either totally rebuild the existing trains or get new ones effectively custom made. (Von Roll are not around any more).
The smartest thing the private owners did was unload the thing onto the government before they were forced to spend big $$$$ upgrading the thing.

The Sydney monorail was an amusement park ride pretending to be a urban transport solution. If you look at the 'real' monorail systems in Japan that were properly designed from scratch to be an urban transport system, they are much larger and more robust. More like elevated metros than any thing else.

When I read the title to this thread, my first thought was that there had been an unfortunate accident while removing some of the monorail cars...

I was doing a bit of research, and there was an article saying that 2 of the Monorail cabs (one driver's cab and one passenger cab) had been taken to the PowerHouse Discovery Centre at Castle Hill during last month. Here is the link to the news article.

According to the Inverell article, a full set was given to the Sydney Rail and Steam museum....funny, I've never heard of this museum before. Anyone shed some light upon this?

Think you will find that SETS (Sydney Electric Train Society) are the recipients of a Monorail set.

To make the following statement understandable:

Gee really? I am sure none of us knew that its tracks were being removed. Thank you Captain Obvious.

I take it you didn't fare up very well in English class? Because with that language, you could be mistaken as a 12 year old who doesn't even understand the value of proper punctuation and spelling.  Rolling Eyes

No, you're right. But yeah, it's being dismantled. It's hilarious. The stations at the Galeries has had most of the 'tube' station structure removed, but they've still got parts of the ribs intact, so it looks like the skeletal remains of a large carcass.

So its quite okay for you to attack others posts in a childlike look at me manner when just a few weeks ago YOU started a thread about how YOU were being bullied and how much it was annoying you.

But it is okay for you to bully others on the net then is it or am i the only one seeing your double standards you low person.

My post was typed late at night after taking my prescription medicine for PTSD which makes me drowsy...but thats ok feel free to allow your double standards kid to roam free wont you..

Watson you can get hurt jumping on bandwagons like you do keep it up and i will loose any respect i have remaining for your posts, oh its okay for you to have shots at stupid post but not for me is it?

Well, actually, it's quite amusing you say I'm 'bullying' because with that same thought in mind, you did exactly that to MC3801.

Anyway ....

Bullying? Are you serious? You think what I wrote is bullying? You gotta be kidding me? I'm probably 3 times younger than you. If you have seen posts from other users here with the same context, you'll be surprised.

I was not at any point trying to bully you at all or belittle you at all. You decided you'd take it the wrong way. Fair enough, I came across as harsh, and for that apologise, but to come out and say I'm bullying you, is only a small unjustifiable excuse for you to lash out on me, claiming I'm a "low life person" (and if you wanted to insult me, you could've at least done a better job), when in reality, I was basically telling you to use proper language skills, because I've seen other posts of yours, and they too, are illiterate.

Then to use your PTSD in your post, really? I don't think it's good that you have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or anything else, however, using it as a backdrop to back your illiterate mistakes only makes you look like a fool (in which your not).

So, learn from it! Look at previous users and look at how they was treated for misuse of the English language, and come back to me and tell me that I'm 'bullying' you. Grow up! Me, at 15 years, shouldn't be telling someone way older than me to grow up.

And seriously, I think you owe an apology to Watson374, as he was merely agreeing with your point, and even correcting me on my post!

If you decide to take it further, do so in a PM.
