SOUTH Australia's iconic Ghan rail journey is under threat by a Defence Department bid to control a section of the Adelaide to Darwin rail line on one in every five days of the year.

The Advertiser can reveal operators of part of the rail line, Genesee and Wyoming, were told they would have to cancel trains in May because Defence needed the Woomera Prohibited Area for military tests.

I would love to understand what the initial agreement with the Commonwealth Railway and the Department of Defence was when the line was constructed.  Is this a new requirement or an historical one?

Surely there's the capacity to come to a negotiated agreement with GWA and ARTC (as it does affect scheduling from Tarcoola to Adelaide) where the line would be closed for hours at a time rather than whole days. If it's done sensibly it could allow track maintenance windows on other parts of the route to be interlinked, if you're going to throw a stone you may as well hit two birds at once.

GWA bleating to the Murdoch rags is
a) disgraceful, and
b) probably just a negotiating tactic to get more of their own way.

Going by the links provided and a map of the WPA, The Tarcoola - Darwin line passes through Amber Zone 2 and the Green Zone. The Trans line borders the Red Zone, but appears outside the WPA altogether.
Now I also see that the Stuart Hwy also passes through the Green Zone, Amber Zone 1 and Amber Zone 2, so going by that, the Stuart Hwy would also be subject to the same closures as the Rail line.
I wonder what the Road transport industry would say about that?
Also it should be noted that Cairn Hill, Peculiar Knob, Prominent Hill and Challenger Mines are all within the Green Zone, so would they also be required to "shut down and vacate personel" on these days also?

The changes sound like a complete bucket of worms to me!!

The Stuart Highway does get closed, and the road transport operators which account for just 12% of land transport on that long-haul route have to put up with it. It's nothing new, and has always been notified well in advance.

Yes, the mines are shut down on days when Defence closes the area. This is nothing new, always known about well in advance and worked in with the miners' schedules.

The only new thing going on here is the hurling of toys in all directions from the orange and black pram.

It is a media beat up on a slow news day by labor supporters having a whinge to try to get more print space but of course you would rather make something out of nothing to suit your very strange mind.

The Government / ADF built bomb shelters for all the pastralest that live out that way.

But when rockets are scheduled to be launched all the people sit outside with a beer to see If they can spot a rocket.

There was a story on landline early this year about farming In the Woomera Pohibited Area.
