Why was he other thread closed ? anyway spotted a set on the up heading to Keon park this morning 11/9 but missed the numbers , some windows opened so would say it was or had been in service

I agree, why have two of the most popular threads been closed with no reason?
1- the other hitachi page with over 273 pages since 2005 and has been closed for no apparent reason.
2- the metro disruption thread had the ADMIN being the last person to provide input/post and then it gets locked.
Some explanation would not be a hard ask for the members that frequent these forums...

I'm also wondering why the thread was closed.
I spotted a Hitachi on the Epping service departing Southern Cross at 8.50am yesterday (11/9/2013). This is the return service of the 8.11 from Reservoir mentioned recently in the other thread.

Theres another Hitachi stored on the Werribee Line side of Newport workshops, clearly visible by Train, next to the set they use for parts. All I got was 285M.

I'm also wondering why the thread was closed.My thoughts are that the closure of the other thread was the result of it being too large. Apparently the size of the original myki thread caused the site to crash in 2009...

The infrastructure has changed a bit too i believe.
Normally if a mod closes a thread they at least give a reason why.

I went through Newport last weekend and there were four Hitachis stabled there. I live near Hawthorn station and haven't seen one go through in ages either. Can't remember last time I caught one.

Extremely long threads on any topic have occasionally been closed (and a new version opened) over the years. Every request to view the topic sends the database server into overdrive recovering hundreds of pages even if only the most recent post is wanted. It all takes time and bandwidth.
The Hitachi sightings thread had a tradition at one time of being renamed quite frequently and often to something totally unconnected with trains. Its final name was given some time ago with the former moderator then leaving the site for pastures new. "I Do Not Like Green Eggs And Ham" sticks in my mind as a name it wore for a few months. There was even a separate topic listing all its names! Those responsible have moved on and are mostly no longer active in the RP community. Other topics which have been split include Myki (now on its third thread) and the erstwhile "Useless Post" threads which in total ran to well over 2000 pages before being finally put to bed.
In the same way the Hitachi trains have moved on and are for the most part no longer active. That makes sightings of them potentially all the more interesting. But if I were avidly following their every move I would prefer a thread which loaded faster.

Seen this morning 24/09 at Victoria Park around 8.05 was 288M on the point with it's pals on it's way to the city in service.
It was only a few minutes after my Epping train so must have come from the Eltham line.

They've cancelled services on Hurstbridge to provide trains, any other lines suffering the same?Craigieburn and Frankston too, plus others I think.
They abandon the passengers who support them all year in favour of a few one offs. Do the same thing at Cup time.

Many lines have had one or two trains cancelled - that's all. For most users the greatest inconvenience would be another few minutes to wait or taking a train a few minutes earlier.
