Some observations from yesterday 14 Sep 2013.

The first train we saw at Bredalbane was SP41 made up of 2508 and 2522.
2508 had the "NSW Train Link" lettering on the last Countrylink scheme, white on the nose and white and orange on the sides.
2522 was unlettered (as to ownership).

We photographed SP41 at the lower bridge and could clearly hear an up train approaching.
This proved to be an up PN grain loaded behind 8129 and 8159. 8129 was from the first batch of upgraded units with white end numbers without black edging. We followed this to the top bridge. Where we waited for the down Melbourne XPT with 2015 leading 2003 both with full Countrylink lettering. We followed this to Gunning where we waited for the usual two PN trains.

After a few minutes 4PS6 arrived, running quite fast with 86 platforms behind four NRs, 57 leading 53, 20 and 32. We followed 4PS6 to back to the top bridge, getting a number of shots and we decided we could wait for 3PW4 which we expected to be right behind 4PS6.

We were heading back to wait at the Crookwell Road bridge between Gunning and Fish River but at Fish River we came across what looked like 3PW4 behind NR class locomotives. We shot this train at the lower bridge, where it was drawn to my attention that the locomotives were in fact 9306, 9311, 9309 and 9301, two each from each order. With 17600 HP, it climbed the hill quite well, and we followed it to Goulburn shooting it before Bredalbane and at the Freeway just before town. We had bright sun for those two, for the first time that day.

Heading into Goulburn we noted two ELs in the workshops but were distracted by CM 3301 and CF4407 and 4408. The last two have been repainted in Freightliner green and yellow, the same scheme as the two GLs which looks a bit odd on a single ended locomotive. I'd known about this for some weeks but had been sworn to silence (not by CFCLA). We took the best shots we could with all three locomotives next to the fence between the workshops and main line.

We saw the up and down Canberra Explorers. The up train 2525 leading 2506 had no lettering while 2505 leading the down still had Countrylink lettering.

Between the two trains, John Holland ballast regulator 411007 and tamper 412011 arrived from the South, probably the Canberra line. We waited for an hour after the down Canberra Explorer and as hoped for (the signals had cleared straight after the passenger) 7SP5 arrived with NR104 (in relatively clean primrose and grey) leading 43 and 40 in the current scheme.

We followed it to Gunning, crossing the XPT from Melbourne at Fish River. With nothing else expected. we went home.

There were no really long waits for trains and the weather cleared up nicely.
