What the hell is happening with the company, are PN not sending a lot of drivers on leave due to lack of work in Victoria. Some depots are even offering re-deployment. How could we be looking for people here in Vic when half the state is on depot duties

Hi OLW

I unfortunately cannot speak for the broader business activities and am not aware of what other depots are experiencing, I can only speak for what recruitment is active or pending across the Asciano business.

I will send you a PM to discuss.

Edit: No response yet to the Freightliner interview, even though they flagged Sept 23 as being the day that an outcome should be known. Wish HR dpts would just let people know either way so candidates can move on.

I'd be calling or emailing them on Monday.

With a few of the last PN positions they call them casual positions, does this mean its really only a temp position or more likely that if its for grain, they are covering them self in case of a bad season.
Or is it only offering causal hours, so if you don't get called you don't get paid?
A bit like my current job with Juvenile justice. The Gov changed the Bail laws so there is less detainee's in the Centre. Know they are still on the streets.

Stuart,

I'd like to echo this question, I'd be keen to have a shot at the Maryborough gig. I'd be happy for casual work, if I could get regular hours.

Casuals are only paid for the hours that they work: no work, no pay. The casuals at my depot get a roster 9 days telling them what work they will be used for. This is subject to change and can be cancelled with no payment to the casual worker. Note, that our depot has forecast rostering: blank line bulk depots work from shift to shift so there is chance you might not know what work you have until the end of the shift.

The idea behind this is when the grain dries up, the casuals can be let go with little of the fuss that full time employees have. It really is a temp position.

Indeed...he will reply, I think he's been busy with some EOI that have been posted on the Asciano web site for the Patrick side of the business. They have his name as the contact...but I'm only guessing. Also I had a quick read of "Motive Power" SEP/OCT and there seems to be a lot of movement with contracts currently in PN NSW leading to hopefully more Driver/Trainee jobs being advertised.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the info.

One other conspiracy theory that I came up with, when the light bulb flicked on. He may have a family and is having some time with his family on a holiday, hopefully not worrying about work.
Cheers

I dare say that he would have minimal time to spend on this forum, due to having a day job and a life lol, and when he does get online here he has to answer a kazillion pms Smile

Stuart's work email came back with "out of office" no date of of expected return.

Edit: Spoke to my in law (Intermodal) the 6-7 trainee positions for Enfield are the result of PN picking up ballast work from another operator (SSR maybe?)

Chronic payment of overtime, retiring drivers and some big contracts coming into play also are behind the push to get trainee "drivers".

Let it be noted, that trainee drivers hired back in 2011 are still not even close to looking for assessment as drivers. If you get the position, you will be used as a second person (a lot of car driving and shunting on the ground-no train driving) for a significant amount of time. You will also be used for more then just ballast work-in fact that makes up only a small percentage of what Enfield does. Expect to fall in love with midnight shunting at Botany, or being covered in wheat or stone dust as you tip wagons.

Long hours, blank line rostering and essentially your applying for a second persons position with the chance of becoming a driver. Keep that in mind if you do apply.

So when are they advertising for Enfield? Or will be internally only?
Cheers, Anthony.
