    Noticed today some concrete sleeper action either side of the Back Tea Tree Rd level crossing. It appears this series of reverse curves on the Hobart side of Tea Tree loop is being resleepered - done or nearly done.
    It is unfortunate that there seems little likelihood of this section being realigned.

    Further to my recent report re concrete resleepering near Back Tea Tree Rd level crossing, I note that concrete sleepers start near Brighton end points to Tea Tree loop and continue towards Brighton out of sight from Back Tea Tree Rd.  Seems to be a significant level of re railing involved as well.
    Further east/north, concrete sleepers and re railing in place from 40km post near Rekuna to and through Campania. Notice now some 94lb/yd rail (assume 2nd hand) in place at Campania replacing some lightweight rail (60 or 63lb) that was there until recently.
    Track looks quite heavy duty and impressive.

    Noticed the recent wet weather has bought several clay holes to the surface on the Hagley - Westbury straight. Looks like more remediation work required?

    Observed a small road vehicle with rail guidance working its way north along the Hobart suburban track late this afternoon.
    First observed stopped short of the former New Town station platform, it continued with further intermittent stops through Derwent Park and readied to leave the rails at Lampton Ave level crossing.  Two crew on board the vehicle which had considerable branding including 'Rail Technology International'.
    Any background info on this from Railpage contributors?

    A bit of small scale track maintenance recently carried out in the vicinity of Botanical Gardens and Government House in Hobart.
    Some rerailing (with recovered rail) on the first curve beyond the 1 km post and a batch of new steel sleepers just past the 2.5 k post - certainly no big deal but an indication of ongoing maintenance of the route on the western shore of the Derwent.

    There is a large pile of used metal sleepers growing at Campania, and I assume other places. What will happen to all these used sleepers now they have been removed? Will they be sold? Will they be scrapped? Will the preservation societies be getting any?

    Will they be used to upgrade the Derwent Valley Line to carry coal if a new coal mine at Hamilton goes ahead.

    Hi,

    For those interested in the new sleeper program there are a bunch of cement sleepers at the top of Don Hill. A few KM's worth at least.

    Here are a few trivial track work obs from mostly the Hobart area.
    There are a few mini deposits of new ballast dispersed at various locations in the suburban area - generally lengths of track of about 10-30 metres have been treated. No apparent tamping since. Appeared over past couple of months. Looks like the contents of one or two ballast wagons distributed over many small spots.
    In some cases it's hard to envisage any beneficial effects from the ballasting.
    Newly created joints with new fishplates also have appeared on curves between Hobart yard and Botanical Gardens - now in place for a number of weeks.  The occurrences don't appear to be that where a section of replaced rail is temporarily bolted at each end pending a thermit weld.
    A further incidence of this observed on a curve on the southern approach to the former Brighton station yard.

    Are there any observers on the NW Coast able to give me an update on the current state of concrete resleepering, rerailing and ballasting along the coastal section west of Ulverstone?

    Basically the concrete sleeper and odd rail replacement is near Preservation Bay section. They have done West Ulverstone to Penguin section and from Roundhill to Howth so far.

    So will there be concrete sleepers continuously from West Ulverstone (on the coast) to Round Hill in the near future?

    With Tasrails eventual intention to pull up the North East Rail Line I wonder whether Tasrail will be philanthropic and donate rail, sleepers and fastenings to Heritage Rail groups like which recently happened in Victoria?

    I have noticed over the last few months, on certain occasions, that the cement train had been using the rusted over second road in the Devonport yard between the cement silos and the yard sidings.  The two weeks ago I saw that this road had been ripped up and removed.  However I saw today walking to work that second hand steel sleepers have been laid out.  Rail is also lying next to the sleepers but I can not tell whether it is the old or new rail.  The Devonport Yard is also filling up with concrete sleepers and new rail.

    The first two roads are now the Main and Loop roads (Main being the closest to the wall). The 3rd road (currently been worked on) will become the dedicated Cement Train road and will only cross over at the Eastern end back on to the Main.

    Will there still be cross over points to allow trains coming from the West to enter the sidings yard or leave them heading west?.  As often the loco and DV1 from the cement train head to Burnie for servicing.

    Remote control points have been put in place at the Eastern end of the Devonport Yard.  This will stop the blocking of the Formby Road Crossing while the driver has had to get out and change the points as in the past.  Also noted on the line for trains heading into the yard a new set of train control lights has been erected.  The light panel has 4 globes, but they are still covered and not yet operational.
