Just out of interest - when was the last year approx. when you could light up a smoke/fag legally on a suburban train in Melbourne ? The red rattler trains first, second class etc. era ?

There are still people enjoying a fag on the network today. one could hang out of the doors on the old Harris sets enjoying a nice gasper on the trip to town.

If you were really keen a VB in the other hand on a hot day was most enjoyable with a fag.

Some things you should still be able to do.

The Harris trains had a saloon seating layout, divided into smaller sections by full height partitions. They were provided with either two or three sets of hand operated dual sliding doors per carriage side. Later sets were fitted with power doors. Interiors were split into smoking and no-smoking compartments until late 1978 with the abolition of smoking on trains, and carriages were designated as First or Second class until 1958 when one class travel was introduced. The trains were initially delivered without end gangways between carriages, this being a later addition.

Yep, I agree some things you should be able to do. Maybe progress really stopped in 1978 -);

i observed an older guy lighting up a PIPE some years ago on the platform at Blackwood here in Adelaide. just pulled out the pipe, stuffed it and lit up. he was really enjoying himself choofing away. whence the train arrived he casually got up and moved into the carriage. i was a young impressionable kid at the time and could not help thinking this guy was in his element.

he continued to puff on his pipe until we reached from memory mile end. i recall the nice tantalising smell of the tobacco as the smoke drifted through the car with many a nose taking in the sent and some i am sure savoring the smell. others well perhaps they longed for a puff after the experience.

i am sure he would have spend many sociable moment chomping on his pipe and enjoying the train ride into Adelaide.

those days have gone now.

i never did see a cigar being lit up on a train or platform. any else?

What about chewing tabacco? How many years has it been since spitoons were supplied in carriages to spit plugs into?

They probably need to reintroduce the spitoons. I'm sick of seeing spit on the floor of trains, absolutely disgusting.

Agreed.  There were once written signs on the walkways at Spencer and Flinders Street Railway Stations stating "no spitting" this was 20 years ago. Not sure if they are still there.

Spitting is a disgusting habit.

To answer the question about Cigars on Public Transport.  Yes I have seen someone smoke a cigar at Flinders Street many years ago.
