NSW PTC BNX Car Carriers

  electrax Assistant Commissioner

Can anyone confirm that there were two BNX double deck car carriers amongst those vehicles that were derailed on the Menangle Bridge back in 1975?  I know that some sources say that this incident occurred in 1971, but I seem to recall driving past the wreckage (before the police closed Menangle Road entirely) shortly before Christmas 1975.  I also seem to recall that the two BNX car carriers involved in the derailment were BNX.34507 and BNX.34530.  (BNX cars did not exist prior to 1974-75, and I am sure that those two vehicles had short lives).

I've got the condemnation dates for the BNX cars (many of which carried the NMNX code under the ROA four-letter classification system) and will post them.

Your date is correct in that is was not 1971.  I drove past the accident just after it happened and I recall it was in 1975 just before Christmas because I was heading to Xmas party in Liverpool after work at Picton.  I remember the remainder of the train heading south up Spaniards Hill after a fair while and I am sure one of the locos was a 42class.  I have photos but not easily accessible at present.  I recall there was car carrier in the derailed consist.

Number on the wagon at right is not 100 percent clear, it could be either 34507 or 34527.

The reduction from 16 tonnes to 15 tonnes capacity may have been a concession to the use of 2CM bogies on the NMNY cars, although the NMNX cars would have had three-piece exchange bogies.
