Very happy. Managed to get A 79 crossing N 467 at Camperdown this morning. Pity cloud took the light by the time the freighter got to the bridge near Terang.

Looks like Saputo are getting Warrnambool Cheese & Butter. I seem to recall in another thread, it being said that if Murray Goulburn were successful, the rail freight could go to road as M.G. are not interested in rail. It is to be hoped that Saputo are happy to continue with rail.

It is my understanding that nothing will change. Some freight will still go by rail as it does now.

Is any of MG products from their Koroit plant going by rail(westvic) ? The windfall from the sale of their WBC shares to Saputo is to be spent on upgrading existing facilities including Koroit to increase production of butter and blends for export.

The line beyond Warrnambool railway station ,the former Port Fairy and Hamilton rail lines are going as far as the Walsh Estate in East Warrnambool where the Westvic is located.Beyond that the line to Dennington (where Fronterra plant is located) the line is closed. There is no existing rail link beyond that to Koroit or anywhere else.
Most industrial estates and possible rail connections will be developed in the easter part of the town as far as I know.
There was a proposal to build an industrial estate with rail sidings near WBC in Allensford.but that failed as geologists found that the area was riddled with underground caves ...
The Westvic site was upgraded recently and should be able to handle current traffic.

Just to confirm Ozfreihts post. The WestVic site has been upgraded and extended so that train lengths of up to 1200 metres can be made up. The tailors with the new Warrncourt (pardon spelling) Crossing Loop due to be commissioned shortly. The 1200 metre loop and WestVic terminal upgrade are intended to enable much longer trains improving financial performance of the freight service including 24 hour cycle time of equipment. I still think access in Melbourne may hinder that but at least the infrastructure is now going in the right direction.

How long is the train now? I would think 1200 meters would be very ambitious, not that there is anything wrong with that.

The train length is very restrictive. It's around 17 to 18 flat wagons so about 400 metres approximately. Given how rarely these days that we see any new investment in new regional rail infrastructure for freight future proofing the corridor for the longer term makes sense. 1200 metres by today's standards is actually not a big train. You only have to look at the QUBE Harefield service to see that. Those trains are way over 1200 metres very regularly. The new loop gives Westvic the opportunity to chase new business and look at multi tiered pricing structures as a means of building that service up.
