A Newcastle Greens councillor is calling on the state government to fund an engineering study into turning an abandoned coalfields railway line into a major cycleway.
Michael Osborne says the 28-kilometre Richmond Vale rail trail between Hexham and Pelaw Main could become a significant tourist attraction.
The state government's announced funding for a similar study for the Northern Rivers rail trail on the far north coast.

The issue preventing further progress on this project is the ownership of land along the former RVR corridor, and if Councillor Osborne was listening to the officers who have been working on the project he would have been aware of that. Until the title issues are resolved there is no point in any further studies.
