With vline being an N down on BG for a while after the moriac incident, any likalyhood of an A or 2 becoming more regular than they have, or is there enough in the system to manage without an N for a few months?

Hi all,

Yesterday, Sunday 15th September, the last ever full V/Line Passenger MkII red and blue liveried train was run, consisting of N465+N18 (ACN54-BRN52-BN1).

It ran 8403 (0804 Southern Cross to Traralgon) on the down, and 8432 (1803 Traralgon to Southern Cross) on the up, stabling during the day in 'C' siding at Traralgon.

N18, the last red and blue carriage set, was transferred by N471 to Newport Workshops today (16/09/2013) for repaint and refurbishment.

Interestingly, car BZN267 and set N12 have already been painted in the current V/Line livery twice before N18 got its chance! BZN267 was outshopped a month or so ago, and N12 was outshopped last Friday, 12/9.

The following V/Line locos/rollingstock remain in red/blue livery, VLP MkII logo unless stated:

As stated above N12 has been out-shopped in VLP3, the first full car set to have been repainted from the current livery. To this N12 is now in the standard VLP3 livery, thus leaving only N14, BZN252 (First N/Z type car in VLP3) BZN261, BZN273, BTN268 and cars from the original refub set FSH25 in the non standard VLP3.

Earlier today set N 4 was shopped at Newport for exam, the 2 N cars of FN8 (ACN 24 & BRN 34 )  ex exam ran on a Geelong Test Run, with BTN 259 & BTN 264.

With the 4 above cars returning to service,  carriage BCZ 259 being last used in 2011, it's conversion , overhaul and then bogie fretting by V/line, saw it out of service for 2 and a half years, even longer than it took to build in 1959!!!!, however rebuilt internally as BTN 259 it has finally been out shopped.

Locomotive A 70 will replace A 66 as the standby - spare as A 66 will be the Guinea Pig for the new train radio and travel the state performing trials, P 13 has also been fitted with new radios.

are there any references to this new train radio out and about? GSM based i suppose?

if p13 has been fitted with the new radios would it be a fair guess it will be traversing the SG parts of the state for the same reason? vline P class in Hopeton would be a good photo op.

N8 is partnered with N14 now to form VN8

FN10 is a nightmare set for the last month. Has caused several services to go late by 15min+ because the AirCon in BZN 252 is stuffed, and a constant door fault in the carriage. It is also the only BZN currently in service that can't run off the AGS and can only run off Head End Power which is bad news on very hot days.

N13 is now by itself and ran the 1832 dwn Shepp this evening.

A pair of sprinters just into Bendigo on a down pass. I'm told that they'll be using these on the Bendigo-Echuca shuttles while the RRL shutdown is on and the Vlocities displaced from this will be used on the Seymour line. There was another pair that arrived earlier too. So, if you want photos of a Sprinter or two at Echuca, now's your chance!

Reality Check

How much longer can we keep this old recycled rolling stock on the track?

I suggest it is time to look at either -

  1. New loco hauled passenger rolling stock - so new locos (max 120 tons each, so 20 ton axle load) and carriages ( 5 car sets) capable of at least 120 kph; or

  2. A series of long haul railcars / DMU’S  based on the Explorer or Prospector design. Top speed 160 kph, but used mainly at 130 kph. But with extra safety strengthening for driver protection, so they are not slowed down by a few hardly used and unprotected level crossings.

Finally use the low profile concrete sleepers to replace the timber relics still out there. So it’s a straight swap for the timber ones.

Duncs
  Mr. Lane Chief Commissioner

I doubt V/Line will ever buy new loco hauled carriages. A new class of 160kph DMU with upgraded long haul facilities is the only option that makes sense.

I imagine that V/Line could get some decent cash by selling off its A class, P class and a handful of Ns to freight operators. They would have quite a surplus of locos if the H sets disappeared and Zs were retired leading to an N set consolidation.

Realistically how long do the H sets and the Z cars have? They really are quite old now.
