    I am yet to experience the new section of track..what I found interesting was that the train entered the new section of track on the up side of Sth Kensington. I was under the impression that trains would be entering the section closer to Footscray.

    I don't think that part is ready yet? Maybe after the current shut-down.

    I second the 'thanks' for that video, interesting to see the first tracks open for traffic.

    The section from Footscray to West Footscray is probably one of the more complex sections to build. V/Line trains will most likely not be running through there until new track is laid through the future RRL platforms 3 & 4 at Footscray, and until the existing platforms have been rebuilt & extended. There was an existing junction of sorts at South Kensington before the RRL tracks went through - it was probably logical to put in another junction between the Metro tracks & the RRL tracks at this location. At the moment tracks are laid across the South Kensington viaduct & the river bridge and even over the flyover.  However the new tracks stop just over the flyover and new tracks won't be laid until the works at Footscray are just about finished.

    Wandered down to the North Melbourne flyover today. Old tracks are well gone, and works proceeding on new base for the new dual gauge tracks.

    They've got plenty of lights setup on the flyover, so obviously working 24 hours throughout the occo. Neighbours are surely loving it!

    I was a little surprised at the slower speed on the new section also (Footscray - South Kensington was quite a bit quicker) but the journey time from Footscray to Southern Cross was still greatly reduced, no doubt due to having a clear path all the way in past North Melbourne (well, near North Melbourne).

    G'day all. Here are a few photos taken on the 27th December showing the country lines into Spencer St. (Southern Cross for all you youngsters) Just before the "Mega Shut".

    Should be interesting to see the end result!

    I think what Some Rail Man is referring to is the structure on the left hand side which appears like it could be a stairwell and lift-shaft under construction?

    EDIT: I just noticed the smiley face... okay !

    While we're on the topic, are there any escalators planned in this project?  I heard that the Libs had canned them in all new stations because of reliability issues.

    Definitely appears to be a lift shaft at that footbridge, similar in construction to the lift shaft at the adjacent station.

    EDIT - There are pairs of escalators going to the island platforms at Footscray and none  at Sunshine.

    Just had a call from dad, the old HV McKay bridge caught fire while the angle grinders were out. Laughing Must've been a minor fire looking at the RRL photo, of course. He and his brother were out till midnight watching the new bridge being installed, I knew I should've went for a look! Laughing

    Sunshine station's weatherboard buildings are completely flattened, also.

    I expect that lift to be vandalized within 2 minutes of commissioning. Yes Escalators (at least 6) are being installed at Footscray and another 5 at Spencer Street. Also I hope they barricade off the escalators on the footbridge after the last train leaves the station.

    On the topic of RRL improvements: On their website, the RRL Authority says that Geelong timings are not expected to improve much (the gains are in the separation from urban services) but they don't really say anything about Ballarat or Bendigo.

    Does anyone have any ball-park ideas about how many minutes could be shaved off the Ballarat service (for example)?  Five minutes?  Ten minutes?

    The Regional Rail Link website Photo page has a couple of photos of the new HV McKay bridge being lifted & installed. It's certainly one of the more substantial pedestrian footbridges I've ever seen.
