he proposed Melbourne Metro rail tunnel will still deliver passengers into the city centre, despite the Napthine government's recent decision to scrap plans to tunnel beneath Swanston Street.

It was revealed this week that the government is considering realigning the $9-11 billion rail tunnel so that it runs through Fishermans Bend south-west of the CBD, radically rewriting the script for Victoria's biggest public transport project.

Melbourne's lord mayor Robert Doyle said shifting Melbourne Metro west would be a "100-year catastrophe for the city" and urged the state government to recommit to the route that was originally proposed.

"The Berlin Wall was a 30-year mistake but not building Metro One in the original way it was designed would be a 100-year catastrophe for our city," Cr Doyle told Jon Faine on 774 ABC on Wednesday.

Napthine can say anything as it won't be built anyway. This is just another 'inconvenience' factor which will build up into it's eventual unfeasibility. There will be further issues later to build the case to the abandonment of the scheme. He can't "abandon" it yet.

Can anyone spot the difference between a rail tunnel and a road tunnel?

Anyone get the feeling Napthine is feeling the pressure over these transport issues?  I question the timing of this announcement and change and cannot quite work out his strategy.

Is he raising it now because he needs to deflect critisium he is taking over #eastwestlink or is there another agenda?  If the feds do give Victoria significant funds for infrastructure then is he taking the metro rail tunnel of the infrastructure australia agenda?

The head of Infrasturcture Australia has recently been put out to pasture.

I can;t quite work out where Napthine is heading with all of this.  It is clear he can see which way the wind is blowing and it is not in the direction he would like.

Information obtained from within the Coalition says they are currently and i mean at this point in time looking at a 5 seat loss to Labour.

A 5 seat loss is probably on the conservative side if you take into account recent events.

What good news could be coming to placate all the bad news. Vline is not even able to offer a passenger service between here and Melbourne equivent to an XPT service.

Grosso,
Would you be able to explain what you mean by this please?
Do you mean putting a rail track(s) in next to the proposed East West road tunnel, or putting a road next to the proposed Metro tunnel? Or something else.?
Can you explain further if you don't mind- I'm not trying to be smart, just don't understand the language I guess.

This is just my guess but I think he means putting the railway down the median strip of the road.
