Mineral Sands - Hopetoun to Hamilton (New Traffic)

When El Zorro had the Iluka Mineral Sands traffic they also ran an export train. Initially this loading was placed onto the back of the Warrnambool to Melbourne goods, but later these became their own trains out of Portland.

Does anyone know if this export traffic is coming back under PN?

The 2 G Class running the Mineral Sands trains are looking a little tagged at present. What are the current locomotive numbers please?  Just through Stawell. http://www.railpage.com.au/railcams/stawellhd/photo/12669396955

current locos this week are G519 and G538. It is G519 with the rather shabby paint work.

There is talk about the Minerals Sands traffic going to a new operator moving away from PN.

There is an additional contract being looked at for new (additional traffic) to Hamilton.

Any more detail on the above?

This rumour has surfaced this week. Various locomotives have been returned to Melbourne from murtoa over then past few days.

Have not heard anything about additional traffic just the move away from PN.

It would be pretty close to the day 2 years ago that El Zorro fell over and PN started pulling the train so it could well be that PN's contract is up.  Any idea who the new potential operator could be?

Without knowing any better, reports had a grain ship that was coming now not. if portland is full they may not want to be shifting any more grain until it can be used again, which would account for the rolling stock movement.

you could also throw SCT into the mix as a legitimate candidate.  El Zorro Mark 2?  I doubt any of the rail access providers would give Ray Evans accreditation to operate on their lines after the mess he left behind after his last attempt at running a railway.

I should have been more specific with how I worded my question.  If PN has stopped operating the sands train, does anyone know which specific operator has taken over the running of the train.  Is it possible that with the amount of sand the plant requires atm that it isn't enough to justify running the train and that it is cheaper to truck the whole way from the mine to the processing plant and not just to Hopetoun to have it railed to Hamilton?

Why is this myth about costs always at the forefront?  It is not cheaper running 20 trucks over 1 train.

What is the cost difference for transporting the same volume of sands via road compared to rail?

Have you done the sums? Do you have the dollar amounts for each mode? or are you assuming?
A train will have a mimimum loading cost, if small amount have to be moved only and less frequently the truck can be cheaper.
