Wagon failure SCT Doohan up 01032014

on the evening of 1 Mar 2014 an up freight train from Doohan in western Victoria run by SCT had a wagon fail only a few kms from its destination. The wagon in question was PQMY 2750Y.

From the photos below some might draw the conclusion that the failure was inevitable, with there seemingly rust in the wrong spot at the failure point.

Have posted a few here.

Built by Perry Engineering but I don't remember exactly where in SA.
Doesn't look like rust to me.

From the pictures, the steel looks freshly broken.
Any more information?

Certainly the web and the outer half of the flange look like they just broke.

The inner half of the flange looks darker, possibly suggesting a fatigue failure.

The original design with solid webs (and the distinctive three oval holes) might have failed more slowly but would still have failed with the same flange damage.

Some voids in the steel as well.

If you look at the side view of the frame, the part under the 40 has far more support compared the the 20 which is where the break is. Was bound to fail at that location, poor old thing scrap yard is the best place for it.

As i type the wagon remains next to the rail line near the Derrimit rd underpass, next to Railway Ave, Werribee. Bogies that where there yesterday have been removed to parts unknown. One imagines the failure occured near this point

A few weeks ago there was a mud hole on the up side of Manor loop. perhaps thats where it all came to bits??

Here's the same wagon in the consist of 7922V on Friday 28/2 for point of reference. There don't seem to be any cracks on this side of the wagon

You wouldn't see the crack. Probably on the inside of the side sill and full of dirt.
