    The answer would appear to be Laceby.

    My understanding of cryptics is that the clue should also contain a hint on the method used to find the answer. I'm not sure from these clues how we're supposed do deduce that. Mind you, if I've got the correct answer, I've obviously managed to work that part out regardless. Wink

    The answer is Laceby. My clues were exactly the same as many previously posted here, with the name completely spelt out. I apologise if it was too tough.

    Nothing wrong with it being tough. I know others do the same thing and don't include a key word or phrase that gives you an idea how to find the answer. Admittedly, it's not always easy to do. I had a good one waiting last week. But didn't write it down and now can't remember what it was. Hopefully I'll remember and use it another time.

    In the meantime, let's see if this one works.

    Clue initially adds Dutch railway four six.

    Dutch Railway (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) initially added 4, 6 to this clue

    It's Sangar, and is in NSW, but on the old VR network.

    Yes, you COULD become pedantic. But so could I, since I recall from many years ago, NSW stations on the VR system were not able to be part of the Victorian Country Cryptic. Wink  Furthermore, although I'm aware that Sangar is given as the spelling in some sources (such as Melway), My VR map, postcode lists, and many online references do show Sanger. One reference goes each way and gives Sangar Rd, Sanger. Most references I've found to sandwich slang also side with the 'e' over the 'a'. Makes it difficult to know which way to go with one's pedanticism. Because I was looking for a VR station name, I went with the VR spelling. So best we agree that one way or the other, I got the correct answer. Laughing

    Let's now attempt to quickly ambulate in wet, spongy ground.

    I think it would be best if I refrained from entering the Victorian Cryptic. That is two questions in a row over which I have been taken to task. I'll leave it to the experts from here on.

    Some posters have a better knowledge regarding the rules of cryptic clue construction but should those of us who do not , stop participating ?

    This is a railway forum with a sub-set for cryptic questions - surely it is not expected that we are all skilled cryptographers ?

    Regarding the spelling of Sangar , I had a similar incident a couple of years ago with "Kirkstall" which I answered as "Kirstall"

    It turned out the VR Maps many of us use , changed the spelling at some point so it depended on which map was referenced !

    I agree. I'm no cryptic expert. I don't know all the "rules" myself. Only trying to help by mentioning those I had been aware of and that I'd seen here before. Rules are there to be broken, right? So keep at it Valvegear. My comment was intended to be light-hearted. That's what the Wink and Laughing were there to help convey.

    Oh, and this quiz goes back so long now, I doubt anyone would bother to go through the whole lot to see what 'rules', hints and tips have been mentioned in the past. Although I have a feeling that the current cryptic I have done may have been used in the past. But even I can't be bothered to go through the whole thread to check it.
