    Back to the trains,

    In another forum I read that the crossover and slip on the Seaford Main leading to storage road #2 was taken out because the 4000s couldn't negotiate it. One correspondent said 4000s could only use platforms 1-3; haven't proof of this, others may know.

    Ian,
    Signs have appeared on the Seaford and Belair Mains saying EMUs noaccess to Plat 5.  This would imply 4 is accessible.  Also it has been wired.

    The removed crossover/slip didn't appear to differ in geometry form the rest of the station approach.  As they were removed months before 4000s reached ARS, I suspect it is more likely that the removal was done to simplify the overhead installation. Since the storage road is now only accessible from Plat 1, its usefulness is limited and possibly explains why it was electrified.

    I noticed today that there are signs at Mile End banning EMUs from the crossovers, surprising since they have been electrified!

    Yes a school hired a train at Noarlunga Centre a while back - I believe it was Cardijn and got two EMU's joint together - there are pictures of it (on here?? or Sensational Adelaide?)

    They don't explode on coupling then, that's good news for future peak hour consists!

    No EMUs on Tonsley Branch yet they are probably waiting for more EMUs to arrive before they try that.

    My uncle that lives across from the line swears he heard an EMU once in the middle of the night just after it opened.

    Personally I don't believe him, but he swears by it.

    There must be 4000's on the Tonsley lines soon, surely - the overhead looked all complete and ready to go when I was last visiting a few months ago?

    Not any time soon for anything other than test/training runs, there are still only five units in service and the first priority for the next eleven to enter service will be to cascade DEMUs off the Seaford line to add capacity on the other lines.

    Even once all Seaford services can be run by EMUs and there's a couple of extras, those extras would be better used by running double consists to/from Seaford in the peaks and having peak Tonsley trains run by a 1-2 car DEMU.

    They may have run one or more as a test of the overhead though and your uncle could have heard one doing that as testing it out at night when it cannot be seen by too many people might have been a wise move before they all start complaining about why the electric trains are not running now to Tonsley. It is usual to test out the overhead by using a train like this just in case electric trains need to use the line before it is officially announced and also to make sure there are no problems with the overhead on this stretch of track.

It is usual to test out the overhead by using a train like this just in case electric trains need to use the line before it is officially announced and also to make sure there are no problems with the overhead on this stretch of track.

    Yes that would make it sound just like another train testing something out after the last train ran at night so no one would really notice it except a certain eagle eared uncle of course! Laughing

    It might have been done this way to save them a lot of embarrassment when they announce that electric services will start only to find out that there is a snag or something that stops it! We all know about holdups and stuff ups on the Seaford line though!

    These Jumbos must be starting to cripple now I heard from a train driver today a jumbo was taken out of service recently for good to be used as parts is this a sign a more rapid delivery of EMUs is going to occur now?

    I doubt it, we've gone nearly a month since someone shouted THERE'S A WOLF (i.e. deliveries will pick up soon) for what must be the sixth or seventh time in the last 17 months and there's no sign that 4008 has even been started yet, let alone approaching readiness for delivery.

    The withdrawn Jumbo will have to be covered by some of the DEMUs which were cascaded off the Seaford line by the third, fourth and fifth EMUs entering service - but perhaps the trailer car/s may be reassigned to lengthen any remaining two car Jumbo consists to three cars (or split the 4 car consist into a pair of 3 car consists).

    Good news I've been told by a train driver 4008T is sitting at Seaford depot awaiting the other 2 parts. Can anyone confirm?

    So that is just 3 weeks since the last delivery of a Tailer Unit. Does this mean that the "ramp up" is more than just a figure of speech?

    Looks like it and I went to check out the Seaford depot late today and can confirm 4008T is at the depot.

    At last we have some good news looks like DPTI and Bombardier are getting their act together finally...

    5 parts delivered each week for the past 5 weeks they are doing one per week now so if one part of 4009 arrives in the next 2 weeks or even 3 I'll definitely be impressed.

    Whatever the problem was it seems to be over now - I wonder how many Jumbo sets are still in service and if they will be finished before the end of the year?

    I think you might find that they will slowly remove them from service as more electric cars come on line. They would remove the worst Jumbo cars maintenance wise first though and keep the rest going I would assume just in case something happens and they get caught short! Well a wise person would do this just to cover all the bases!

    I have noticed an early morning service on the Grange line has changed from a 2 car jumbo to a single 3000
