Railfan Day 2014

Following the return of trains to Bullarto earlier in 2014, the DSCR is now planning a special event for later this year so that railfans can experience the best that our railway has to offer.

The event will be held on a Saturday, starting and finishing at Daylesford railway station and will include:

- Y159 with a branch line goods consist running the full length of the line
- An unusual rail motor consist that hasn’t operated at the railway for over ten years
- Organised photo stops for passengers on the trains
- Info packs for lineside photographers
- Lunch at Daylesford station

Before proceeding further with planning, we would like to know how much support there is for this proposal. Please register your interest by PM'ing me.

Depending on the level of interest there may be further additions to the day’s activities.

Railfan Day 2014 update:

Following the positive feedback for the proposed railfan day, detailed planning has commenced and the work required to re-commission the required rolling stock back into service has begun.

Given that there is a substantial amount of paperwork, mechanical work and planning required for this event to take place, we expect that the event is unlikely to take place before October at the earliest.

When a final date is chosen, we will allow plenty of notice so people from interstate can make the required bookings.

Just one request for consideration, please.
When it comes to costing the proceedings, could a concession fare (pension card holders?) please be considered as well as the typical adult/child/family rates?
It seems that not having a concession rate is common these days amongst rail fan trips and the like, and that can preclude people like me from attending.

Is there a proposed date as yet? I may be interested if it coincides with other plans that will place me in Victoria.

Hi all,

As of tonight, the premium tickets are now sold out. Thank you to everyone who has booked on this option and we look forward to seeing you on Saturday 8 November 2014. Standard and lineside tickets are also selling but we still have tickets available.

Standard offers great value at only $25 per person. The ticket is only $10 more than our regular sunday trains but includes one return trip in DERM 63RM, photo stops (with the ZL on the back in one direction), an info pack and a BBQ lunch.

Lineside is ideal for the photographer who wants to plan his/her own day in the car. Not only do you get an information pack with train running information, you also don't have to worry about lunch as it is provided at Daylesford station with the BBQ. All this for only $10.

Here is a classic VR scene you can expect to see on Railfan Day 2014 at the DSCR (minus the high vis on the crew where possible)

Standard and lineside are still available right now at http://www.trybooking.com/99662

Well, not quite "Classic VR". If that was the real Victorian Railways, the Y class would have faded paint and be covered in grime. It certainly wouldn't be freshly painted and shiny. Shocked

best of luck with your day, what DSCR has achieved is incredible, especially as you have done it with far less resources and grants than a couple of more high profile preservation outfits. Smile

It's got that out of the workshops look. Wink

If all goes well and the event is supported by the railfans out there, this type of day is something we would like to do more often. The bushfires and subsequent rebuilding works over the last few years, plus the construction of the storage shed has naturally been a priority for our small group of volunteers since 2009.

Do you like collecting Edmonson tickets? Here are some of our special tickets which have been printed for the Daylesford Spa Country Railway Railfan Day on 8 November 2014. If you want one of these as a souvineer of the day, book now!

Standard and Lineside tickets are still available. For those who purchase a standard ticket, there will be photo stops on the DERM plus plenty of opportunity to see and photograph the Y class hauled goods.

If you don't mind a bit of a walk it will be possible to comfortably catch the bus back to Woodend. The DERM will be back in the Daylesford area by 4:30pm and the bus leaves at 17:25. The advertised finish time includes an extended photo opportunity within the Daylesford yard limits plus shunting.

Contact me by PM if you would like further info.

Railfan Day is this Saturday, 8 November 2014 and the event is shaping up nicely. Bookings are still open for Standard ($25) and Lineside tickets ($10) and we would like to see you there on the day!

The Lineside ticket is great value for those of you who want to photograph the trains from your car. You get a timetable so you know what's going on, plus a souvenir ticket and a BBQ lunch included at Daylesford station.

While there will be tickets available on the day, you can save time by booking ahead and having your info pack ready to collect at Daylesford station on Saturday morning.

For those of you who will be following the trains in the car between Daylesford and Bullarto on Saturday 8 November, please be aware of the following:

When choosing line side locations, please remain in areas which are normally accessible to the public and do not trespass on private land. Please keep clear of running lines at all times. There are many safe locations to view our trains from and take great photographs without putting yourself or others in danger.

The road between Daylesford, Musk and Bullarto is a two lane country road with no overtaking lanes and you will encounter slow moving country traffic. Please observe the road rules at all times and be aware that police do patrol these roads.

The timetable is significantly slower than the normal Sunday timetable as there are photo stops mid section. You can easily get in front of the train without breaking any road rules or putting yourselves or others in danger.

Remember that safety is the No 1 priority.

Thanks to everyone who turned out for the first DSCR Railfan Day! Your support was a big part of the day's success. Also, many thanks to all of our dedicated volunteers. Without them the day would not have been possible.

It was great to be able to relive the charm and atmosphere of the Victorian Railways branchline era. And to also let the public and railfan community see what we have to offer to the heritage rail scene in Victoria.

We welcome any feedback and suggestions for future events. Also please feel free to share your photos and videos from the day!

Keeping things 'on track'

It was a fantastic day with plenty to see and photograph, the attention to detail was most impressive.

Put me down as a definite starter should another event go ahead in future!

Well done to all concerned.

Thanks for the feedback and great shots. I think another event is simply a matter of when, not if. Smile
