Only Labor regional rail commitments were. 1. Geelong gets twenty minute Off Peak Weekday frequency with alternate trains originating/terminating at South Geelong and Waurn Ponds. New RRL timetable from 04/14.
2. 20 extra V Locity cars on top of current order for 43 cars.

The new government also made promises regarding new Bendigo railway services.
  Duncs Chief Commissioner

One thing it could do, upgrade the Shepparton Line to V Locity standard for 130 kph running. Instal a couple of passing loops, and run six services a day at times that suit people’s needs. That would politically lock in the local pro labor independent member of parliament,  and lock out the Nationals. Which is all they deserve as they took this seat for granted for too long.

The flagship services (up am and down pm) could be a partial express from Seymour to SCS and so reduce the overall travel time to 2 hours each way. The other services would come down from 2hours 40 minutes to 2hours 10 minutes. So all trips would be 30 minutes faster.

It only promised a study into a Bendigo suburban rail service which will just waste money and say urban transport within Bendigo is a job for an improved urban bus service, then do nothing about improving Bendigo urban bus services .

Agree high time Shepparton went over to V/Locity totally and increased frequency of services . The reality is that this requires capex to upgrade track between Mangalore and Mooroopna to Class 2 allowing 130kmh for V/Locity with improved lx protection .
Then up to 5 return trips can be run on Weekdays on the existing infrastructure, no crossing loop required . Medium term yes, short term no as VLP is well short of V/Locity to meet patronage projections of RRL patronage on opening 04/15 .

Best Shepp is going to get now is extra am Up which currently at 0510 is too early to attract decent patronage. This needs to be 0550 ex Shepp and the am Up but back to 0830 gives a better spraed of service . As soon as stabling fixed for two trains overnight at Shepp then anticipated either 1530 Dn or 1630 Dn Seymour will be extended through to Shepparton .

I like that idea duncs.

The only problem I have is the capacity of the vlocity sets. They are expensive to run in multiple units. Where large capacity is required such as warnmbool and Albury and shepparton loco hauled coaches is still the most economical to use.

Since the seat has now been lost by the nationals and there is as you say an independent pro rail person now in place would she consist looking at extending rail services north of shepparton ?

Extending north would entail Tocumwal on the Murray. That would need its own track upgrade from class 4 to class 3, but it “might" be viable.

A quick look at the political landscape ,  as far as seats won to bring labour back in power,  all regional seats won by labour are on the RFR corridors , or Seymour line,  which have  mostly modern  rollingstock, and frequent services, all provided by the former Bracks Labour Government,  testimony to that project.

In 4 years in power the  liberals did nothing, perhaps in the mirror they will look,  and see that while in opposition for the 7 years prior, and criticising continually the RFR project for all the cost blowout, well whom is laughing now,  it goes to show now that the RFR investment in regional rail infrastructure and rollingstock has certainly paid dividends for the Labour Party. Romping home in several former marginal seats.

The national party held seats have seen no new rollingstock since 1981 or track speed improvements,  and the locals still back the nationals ,  I guess they like it like that.

Up to the incoming government to get on with the job, let's hope like the one they are replacing they don't sit on their hands too long !!!

Yes you are right and Mr Mulder still refers to it as "farce rail". The sooner they get rid on that drongo the better. And to think, the regional renewal cost about $1billion for 500km of track and the Libs response was to build a tunnel at $1billion per kilometre. No doubt that project played well in Doncaster, but in the regions it was just more evidence of Kennett style project spending (CityLink) and regional neglect. Of course, RRL will be opened next year and Labor will rightly be able to claim credit for their project, the most important piece of rail infrastructure since electrification. Ten years ago, it was an idea that rail planners dreamed of but never thought would be built. And if it wasn't for the GFC, it would not have been. How ironic. I wonder if Mr Abbott will try to hog the limelight.

Great post ted.

Mr Abbott is hog tied. He is facing a budget catastrophe.

What your post shows are there are many votes in rail projects across Victoria and I suspect across the country.

Could it be we have seen the last of the libs in this state for 3 or 4 terms ?

Let the new government get on with delivering good rail projects. It is as there was not a lot in there policies for regional rail.

Finally my only regret on the part of  labor years ago was not to gauge convert the entire state to SG for a cost of $800m. This included the metro network.

I have often wondered...Does the middle car really need to be powered ?

Could you not have the old M-T-M setup ?

Except that the Nationals lost the seat of Shepparton to an independent partly because of the lack of action on rail.  (Although it must be said that reopening the Toolamba-Echuca line to freight was one of the better things the LNP govt did - but should have fixed the Dookie line too btw).

I had a chat to Jacinta Allen about the state of regional railways a few months ago.  It seems that they'll set up an infrastructure committee and take it from there.  Various people are talking to the feds apparently.  Hopefully we don't have the situation of death-by-committee and terminal delays to getting things done.

graincorp has been requesting access to the dookie line for over 18 months.  the lnp where not interested.  labor should be able to correct the issues and make that happen.

the libs also reopened the rainbow line iirc?

Yes.  LNP reopened the Yaapeet line as far as Rainbow.

As for other abandoned lines in Vic, the Inglewood - Eaglehawk line should get looked at IMO, with serious thought on making the Marong intermodal happen.

Has this been confirmed ?

Fiona Richardson was the opposition spokesperson for the transport portfolio in opposition before her illness. She has some experience.

Actually it was the Member for Altona, Jill Hennessy who was the shadow PT Minister.

Jill Hennessy will now be the Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance services.

"The Vinelander"

It is not clear which Minister will have responsibility for rail freight and logistics matters. In Opposition they had a Shadow dedicated to the task...we can only hope it doesnt get buried inside public transport and roads.
