Garratt coming to Southern States in 2015!

    Is this a standard gauge locomotive? Does that mean that Victorian trips would be limited to the standard gauge network? What destinations would that mean?

    Yes SG which means Albury to Serviceton via Cressy and Maroona with a branch Maroona to Portland plus branches Benalla to Oaklands,  Murtoa to Hopetoun and Dimboola to Yaapeet (???).

    Its going to be a great trip when it happens. Nice big train, heritage/old carriages, vintage diesels as insurance power. Hoping to do the Portland trip myself.

    Those making the trip following to train, make an effort to contribute to the costs of the service by donating to ARHS and Steamrail at the stops, or via other means i'm sure are available.

    I suspect the SA section might be a bridge to far and even going a long way west of Melbourne.

    Time will tell when the trip is announced.

    GM and TL's will be on the move very soon to Seymour with the Steamrail cars at Seymour heading to Dimboola also to get ready for this event.

    4 Cars are operational for Passenger use. Hoping to have 6 cars for the Garratt Event.

    Isn't the 60 class going to bring some of its own rolling stock to add to Steamrail's cars, or do you know something we don't?

    what a decent reaction , as other can see you are not interested at all.

    Remember the final cost will not be ARHS ACT's wish, I think over 70% will be costs to do the trip, access fees, wateer, coal, logistics station fees, driving and all the other paperwork, and very marginal profit. I think the organisers should be congratulated for making an effort. Without their dedication, well.

    And there will be more than 4-6 cars, I suggest you tell us why such a post, or are you deliberatly trying to get a reaction, hmmmm.

    You got it in one.... All my photos are ruined!!

    But it looks like I'll have to resort to being line side as opposed to being on the train if there's limited seating capabilities and insanely high ticket prices

    Love to know how you know the costs and exact consost of the train. Please elighten us. I am sure the organisers would love to know too.  Some have informed us in this thead, Think I'll stick to their valuable info and just ignore you.

    Been written that there will be more than 4-6 cars, thats the one they are picking up on the way. You do know ARHS ACT has pass cars ? So I'd guess 10-14 cars  at least, so a decen train for a  great loco.

    When the costs come out, we'll see.

    Are you serious? Do you really think that a locomotive as powerful as an AD60, on a tour generating as much interest as this one is, would use only six carriages? And that it would travel light engine from Canberra to Dimboola (at great expense) to pick up said carriages?

    Do you not think it's more likely that the trip from Canberra will use ARHS ACT's carriages, thus paying for the trip down, and that the Dimboola carriages would supplement those from Canberra for the Melbourne-Adelaide leg?

    I think it will be platform length especially at Spencer Street that will govern how many vehicles can be on the train, rather than the number available or the demand for seats, The ARHS will no doubt be able to supply enough to 'length out'.
    Another complication may also be that 6029 will most likely be unable to run around it's own train at Spener due to it's length.

    I don't think the poster means "ever", they mean "at Southern Cross". I assume the train would "stage" at Dynon, and arrive into Southern Cross as diesel/cars/steam loco, thus allowing the train to choof off to the destination. Upon returning, the diesel would hook onto the rear of the train and lead the train to Dynon. I understand this is how Steamrail trains do things when the consist is too long and/or a double-header. Certainly it has been done multiple times in Sydney with a diesel piloting from Eveleigh to Sydney Terminal.
