Hi all,

I am planning to take a trip to the riverland in the next few weeks, does anyone know what days/times grain trains on the Pinnaroo and Tookayerta lines have been running lately?

Thanks

Mike

Trains run on an ad hoc basis.

There has not been a train to Pinnaroo for a month or so and not for a couple of weeks out to Tookayerta.

When they have run, the empties leave Adelaide early afternoon and head out onto the branch from Tailem Bend around 1730hrs.
Usually back at Tailem very early morning and back into Adelaide mid-morning.

This approximate timetable may (or may not) change during the cooler months and see them load on the branches during daylight hours.

As has been posted elsewhere, currently this is expected to be the last season for these branches.

Loxton Saturday night, Pinnaroo Monday night.

Average season, probably around 30 trains on each line, maybe a few more. Must have had at least a dozen go out to Loxton already.

Yes, Mindarie is the location of a Heavy Mineral Sands Mine which is currently mothballed.
Mineral sand was railed out in containers.

Why they are not running but Illuka is strong?

There are many different types of mineral sands that are used to make different exotic metals, Mindarie was mothballed because that particular type of sands price dropped making the mine uneconomical.

8.2.2 Mineral Sands
Mindarie is located on the rail line near Halidon. The mines stockpile is designed to load two
trains weekly of between 40 and 50 containers per train (Appendix 8) directly onto the mainline
onto trains operated by GWA. This was occurring until 2011 before the mine went into
administration.

The new owners Murray Zircon, determined that the GWA rail freight was not viable compared to
the lower capital cost road alternative and use Qube Logistics to road freight seven to ten B
Double tippers each day (Appendix 8) the three hours and 200km to Inner Harbour at Port
Adelaide. Qube Logistics designed a tipper truck and trailer capable of carrying 44t net payload
and operate a terminal on the eastern side of Murray Bridge to service Mindarie. Qube Logistics
have secured 68t gross mass permits to travel to Adelaide on the South Eastern freeway.
Murray Zircon maintains that the road option provides a lower cost, safer and faster solution
compared to the rail that took ten hours from Halidon to Tailem Bend and another day to
Adelaide.

The mine seems to be open - the study was published November 2014. Doesn't seem to be any news about the mine being mothballed since then.

I'm not sure how it could be safer?

The rail transit timings given are total bollocks.

I haven't done the sums, but I think the tonnages are only about half what they were previously.

How much are Murray Zircon paying for road upkeep?

Maybe we do need that "rail advocacy"

Heads up for anyone looking for a weekend drive. The Loxton and Pinnaroo have reverted to daylight running on the branches.

There is a Loxton booked for Saturday and a Pinnaroo for Tuesday. Work on them getting away around midday on the return journey.
