In a job that has not happened for some time the UP Tocumwal will shunt Mooroopna tonight.  12 wagons to come on.

Good news for the Mooroopna area.

Does this signal a return to regular traffic into the sidings at this location or was the movement something of a once off ?

Customer is railing out cotton in 40 ft. containers. Has done so several times since Patrick shut down usually for two or three week periods. Customer is based in North Shepparton.

Is there scope for a rail operator to move in and do a deal?  Why did this traffic move to road?

SPC once exported processed goods, but does no or little of these days.

Export traffic would be rail contestable traffic.

20 wagons dropped off overnight, all with 40 ft containers. It's been a month or so since Mooroopna has been used.

Thanks @emmastreet great update.

Was this detached from the Tocumwal Service?

Given the amount of traffic at Tocumwal and how hard it is becoming to place a container on the train there makes you wonder if an additional service is required?

Not Qube unfortunately.                                                                                                                                                               PN wagons off/on the PN Tocumwal service. 10 wagons left behind but my guess is that would be because the customer had not finished loading them.
Asciano are not interested in running the terminal full time let alone putting on another train to service it.

I'll go for the regular mix of 60's and 40's. Of the 10 wagons there this morning 7 are VQOF, 3 VQRF and 1 VQEX.

Could this service be the same G class locomotives used on the Denni Rice train as they are required for a very late evening departure and arrive back into Melbourne in the morning or is this the Denni rice train with additional loading attached/detached?

According to submissions to a parliamentary enquiry into the sale of the Port of Melbourne, a Shepparton milk manufacturer will need to transport 1500 40' containers to the Port of Melbourne each month. This is the reason given for the re-activation of the Mooroopna terminal.

October 1 was given as the starting date. The non-commencement of the service could be because the increased UHT milk production has not yet started, or the whole proposal may have fallen through.

Truck movements out of the Pactum factory may give a clue.

1500 per month over a 20 day working month is 75 per day.  That is a lot of freight and a lot of trucks on the road if it is not carried by rail which is good news.  Is the plant adjacent to the terminal or are local truck movements required?

Will this loading go to Appleton or West Swanston?

China-bound: Pactum Dairy Group’s general manager of operations Mark Whirter packs UHT milk for export.

A NEW UHT milk plant in Shepparton will have the capacity to triple its production in the longer term.

Pactum Dairy Group has spent $40 million revamping an existing factory to pump out millions of litres of UHT milk in 250ml, 330ml or one litre packs each week. A company spokesman said the processing plant’s initial capacity is 100 million litres of milk a year but this could increase to as much as 300 million litres as sales progress.

It would produce packs of full cream and skim milk, flavoured and lactose-free milk.
About a quarter of the plant’s output this year will go to China after the group secured a supply agreement this month with Bright Dairy, a Chinese company with 400 distributors.

The new plant will be officially opened tomorrow by Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss.
Pactum Dairy Group is a joint venture between ASX-listed company Freedom Foods Group Limited and Kyabram’s Australian Consolidated Milk.

ACM is responsible for the milk supply arrangements while Freedom Foods Group will run the processing plant.

75 wagons per day is a lot of wagons if you are working a 5 day week.

Would this be a 50 wagon train or shorter?

The plant is not near the line so a truck will be required to move the containers to the rail siding which is only a single track siding (or used to be).  The company would have been better to build the plant on land adjacent to the rail line and put their own sidings in with government assistance.

If this is true then good news for Shepparton in jobs and specifically rail jobs.  We might see crews once again based at Shepparton?
