Campbellfield/Somerton Freight Rail Terminals

Hey guys,

Had a scour through old threads but i thought i'd ask as recently i've driven past the Somerton Austrak Freight Yard... It looks almost like their just about ready to rip it up? No containers or anything in that yard?
Who owns the yard?
Who leases it?
Who maintains their track?
Is the rail terminal even used? Is it technically active still?

The cement line where i think Boral parks their trucks near, is that line for cement still actively in-use or is it a dead line?

Thanks for answering my questions that have been answered probably before..

I believe QUBE may have some inlvolvement with one of the yards there, and often store wagons in the area.

As for the Somerton Cement siding, I was under the impression that PN still ran the odd train from Waurn Ponds to Somerton when required, last time I went past there was a rake of cement pots stabled (or where they stored?) at the end of the line. Surely somebody else can provide more definite answers.

I think the Yard is P&O.

Somerton Cement is alive and well.  Checking Albion Railcams shows the train running overnight.  Anyone know how the loading is handled for Standard Gauge?

Usually through Albion between 2am and 3am during the week.  Take a look at camera 1 as look overnight.  Camera 2 will have the entire train.

I will be looking at camera 2 tomorrow morning as this will have the light loco transfer to Seymour from Geelong around 4am.

The Albion cams have become an excellent resource.

Odd, in the main rendering it looks like Joppa's had a cat on keyboard moment.

Something relevant from another thread.

G'day all.
It seems the Austrack siding at Somerton and associated facility have been vacated. Qube have also been barred from using the site to stable trains as there seems to be no accredited operator for the site. Can anyone shed any light on the future of the site, or will it be replaced by a not yet built Donnybrook (Closer to Bevridge I believe) inland port?
Cheers all.

Looking at Albion overnight shows a transfer of cement (BG) from Geelong (loaded) https://www.railpage.com.au/railcams/albion2/photo/19840622343 through around 2.17am and a return around 5am through Albion toward Geelong. https://www.railpage.com.au/railcams/albion2/photo/20439374376

The trip from Geelong seems to have been held at Albion waiting for the line to Jacana for a couple of minutes.

A G class worked the train from North Geelong Yard.

The trip back to Geelong looks special as the train is running next to an UP Brisbane (aurizon) in the photo.

Those who are interested in cement transfers I found this and a new feature on Railpage.

Looking up X44 on the page where there is now a Multimedia Section to the locomotive.  Excellent.

I also found video attached to the loco and I could play it.  The video shows a cement transfer into Melbourne Yard from where? behind X44.

Where is Salta at Somerton?  They mention Somerton alongside Altona and Dandenong South.

Its also mentioned that they would connect the intermodal terminals (incl Somerton) to the PoM using a shuttle service if the Footscray Road line was reactivated...

From the look of things , Salta seems to be the new owner of the former QUBE terminal. The animation clearly shows it

Isn't SCT currently using the Footscray Road line for its intermodal service from the hub in the Wimmera?

Unlikely, when, and if, the scheme ever gets off the ground given the anti rail philosophy in Victoria and the declining Port Of Melbourne when compared to Sydney.
Where would one buy the 1,500 Vdc locos these days especially given the small number required. If available, they would cost double what a comparable diesel electric loco would cost not to mention the problems associated with lifting containers in terminals under overhead wires?
The trip train concept will never fly in Melbourne and Sydney will eventually take over to such an extent that the Port of Melbourne will become a relative backwater due, in part, to there being inadequate or no rail services, no will to provide them and little intent to use them (with the exception of SCT and Salta).

I wouldn't read too much into it.  Probably a case of the video animator getting carried away and adding a panto.

Nice video though....

What's needed is someone in Govt and Industry with the drive and permission to make it happen (the rail shuttle to the intermodals, that is).  At present it seems to be more a case of consigning it to the "too hard basket".  Lazy.
