Hong Kong Octopus Card

i have been using the MTR card for a week now across the entire Hong Kong system including trains and trams and ferry. The card is brilliant as it can also be used at various retail outlets. One of the issues I can see is the inability to top up the card outside of railway stations other than online. Also of note is single journey tickets are still issued by machine should you require one.

You can top up the card at any 7-Eleven, Circle-K or other convenience store.  It is not required to top up at an MTR station.

Just hand the card to the attendant at the convenience store and say "add $100" or whatever denomination and hand over the cash.

Thanks for the heads up I shall do that this morning as heading to central and then Shenzen for  the day.

This city has really moved ahead in the 15 or so years since I worked up this way on a regular basis. Once the new high speed rail terminal is completed at Jordan the network in many ways will be complete heading to and from China. The Hong Kong approach has been to build the new high speed terminal right in the heart of Hong Kong peninsula. This will be a main benefit to business travellers who will have an easy change to MtR for Hong Kong island etc.

Also of note more MTR extensions this time on the south of the island with a new line to Ocean Park with continuation to what looks to be Aberdeen.

Not that it matters because in  Melbourne we're stuck with Myki,  but what's your comparison with their card Beans? ??

Hi Dave,

I have a lot of ideas and feedback on the MTR and the Octopus card setup.  I also checked out the new CRH line in Shenzhen and looked at the development of the new station at Jordan for the extension of the high speed line into Hong Kong.

Will provide a more detailed response over the next days as have only just landed.
