That depot is only for drivers of the Ghan, PN don't operate any freights on the Tarcoola-Darwin line (GWA are the only rail freight operator on that line)

Cool article but did PN ever run freight to Alice ?

Nice story but this is just one of several self serving bulletins recently issued by PN.   Remember PN are only in the NT because of their Hook and Pull contract for GSR's Ghan service.   In the scheme of things a very easy gig managing 1 round trip per week.

PN used to operate the Alice Springs yard but sold those operations to G&WA a year or so ago.
(I believe at the same time G&WA sold Cook operations to PN)

PN operated the yard only (shunting etc), the freight trains through Alice Springs are run by G&WA

Australian national my father says also ran to Alice springs for many years with freight trains is this true?

Is this years the actual hard used by the original Ghan?

How did PN end up managing the yard?

Commonwealth Railways / Australian National ran the Central Australia Railway since before completion of the Alice Springs Extension in 1929.

ok the time line goes like this :-

NG reaches Alice, line owned and operated by Commonwealth Railways. (who ran the original Ghan)
Federal Gov forms Australian National Railways from CR, SAR and TGR
ANR later become AN (owned by fed gov)

AN builds the new SG line from Tarcoola to Alice Springs; Alice Springs yard become SG, old NG track abandoned
AN Freight becomes National Rail; AN passenger sold and becomes Great Southern Rail (GSR); AN's track goes to ARTC
NR is purchased by PN

In 2000, the AustralAsia Rail Corporation (a company owned by the Northern Territory and South Australian Governments) awarded the contract to build and operate the Adelaide to Darwin railway line as a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer back (BOOT) project to the Asia Pacific Transport Consortium. The Asia Pacific Transport Consortium contracted FreightLink to implement the project and to operate the railway on a 50 year lease. This lease included the Tarcoola - Alice Springs line.

November 2008 Freightlink went into voluntary administration.
Genesee & Wyoming agreed to purchase the assets of FreightLink on 10 June 2010
The sale meant that the 50-year lease on the Adelaide–Darwin railway was transferred to Genesee & Wyoming Australia

PN continued to operate the Alice Springs yard during the Freightlink era

I'm employed by GWA, and work in the Alice Springs yard as a Terminal Driver/Operator and also a stand by driver (2nd man) for main line, which I've had to do.
GWA have three drivers and Terminal Operators to handle the freight side of things. Occasionally PN were requested on a spot hire basis to supplement driving duties, although that has waned a bit with GWA having the three drivers.
Otherwise PN have their Ghan to operate. Sometimes GWA assist PN in arriving and departing Ghan's.
At the end of the day, although we wear different uniforms, we're all here to get the freight through (PN have walk on walk off freight). One of the advantages of a small depot, both from a GWA and PN perspective so far as manning goes, is that we cooperate together.
