Good trainspotting locations in and around adelaide cbd

    I'm heading over to adelaide on the overland next weekend and I'm hoping someone can suggest a few good spots in and around the cbd, or a within a short train ride that I can check out.

    I've looked up some places already and it seems to me mile end and dry creek are pretty good spots. Are they easy to get to?

      Lt. Commander Data Station Master

    Location: Stobie Poll City (Adelaide).
    Mile End is one of the best served stations on the whole network. Any Seaford, Tonsley or Belair train will get you there, they have a combined frequency of 15mins or less throughout the day on weekdays. Weekends have a 30min or less frequency.

    Dry Creek is serviced by every other Gawler train, the ones that depart Adelaide at :08 and :38 past every hour during the day on weekdays. Weekends have a 30min frequency as well.

    Dry Creek Station is before the yard proper, so the trip to Mawson Lakes/Mawson Interchange is worthwhile for the passing view (plus it has a much higher train frequency).

    Also Kilburn has a good view over the intermodal terminal from the adjacent hill

    Dry Creek Station is before the yard proper, so the trip to Mawson Lakes/Mawson Interchange is worthwhile for the passing view (plus it has a much higher train frequency).

    Also Kilburn has a good view over the intermodal terminal from the adjacent hill

    How many freight workings these days originate or terminate at Dry Creek? Surely the majority of the traffic is handled in the Islington intermodal terminal (viewable from the hill just SE of Kilburn Stn) with a few workings branching off S of Dry Creek to Port Flat and Outer Harbor.

    Worth a trip up to Belair.

    Also try Blackwood and Glenalta.

    Location: Stobie Poll City (Adelaide).
    Steamranger at Mt Barker could also be worth a visit - no AdMet trains go there, but buses do (every 1/2 hour or less 7days on routes T840, 840X, T842, T843, 860F & 864F). About 1 hour trip in each direction.

    For taking photographs, the Grand Junction Road bridge just north of Islington intermodal terminal provides good views of the standard gauge in the morning, northbound better than southbound.

    The Port Wakefield Road bridge just north of Dry Creek motive power depot is also a good place for photos of north bound trains in the morning.

    But despite what has been said above you will still see more trains at Dry Creek.

    More than a few head from the north direct to the port (avoiding Islington) including northern grain, Cristal Mining, GWA (Oz Minerals), GWA (CU River), the Balco, Aurizon services from the North, SCT (wine train).

    19 or 20 return workings per week, less than 3 per day to the Port in the current ARTC train plan is hardly many! However they do contribute to the traffic past Dry Creek Station.

    Speaking of the ARTC timetables, looks like I'll be able to see the ghan and a melbourne to perth freight on the sunday I'm there. It's due through islington yard, so if I get off at one of the stations there would I be able to get a good vantage point to watch them go by?

    The northbound Ghan 1AD8 usually departs Keswick passenger terminal at 12:15pm so should be through Islington around 10 to 15 mins after that (although is can depart late)
    Also be aware the southbound Ghan 4DA8 is running the "expedition" timetable so it arrives into Adelaide on Saturdays at 10:45am

    You could get off at Kilburn and walk north up Churchill road to Grand Junction Road.

    There is a good view of the standard gauge in both directions and as far as the entrance to the PN intermodal terminal from the road bridge.

    If your going to get off a Kilburn and walk, you might as well get a 238 or 239 bus. They go every 1/2 hour, and depart from locations in the CBD much more useful than the Adelaide Station.

    Just want to say thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I went down to mawson lakes and saw 7MP1 depart from dry creek yards, then back down to islington and saw the ghan go past. They were both great spots and I probably would'nt have found if not for some handy hints from you guys. So thanks again!
