Just love this piece so accurate it is taking words out of my mouth. Why are we spending money on the Tullamarine freeway?  What will it actually deliver in terms of benefits?

Are those benefits ever tested once the project has been delivered?  If not why not?

It seems the western distributor falls into the same bucket as this piece is identifying.

The ONLY and I repeat ONLY projects which are delivering real benefit under Daniel Andrews are the level crossing removals. I might also add some of the so called v/line upgrades but really?

The other projects are so dumb

I think we can all agree with the author that Yes Minister was a brilliant show. As for some of his other statements..

I reckon it wraps up where politics has gone wrong in Geelong. And Victoria and Australia. People don’t like the way democracy is working. And they don’t like the way politicians and bureaucrats mistreat them.
Somebody
You were the bloody mayor of Geelong last year! Your incompetence is where politics went wrong (amongst many other things).

It took less time to get to Melbourne in the 1800s
Somebody
Drink.

How moronic was closing the Tullamarine Freeway to build one extra lane? Costs millions but it needs at least four lanes; you’ll only end up paying through the nose building them one at a time.
They squeeze an extra lane into the Westgate that fills up immediately, add a lane to the Western Ring Road that fills up immediately.
Somebody

Every time they add lanes, traffic gets worse. Let's build FOUR more lanes! That'll fix it.

The electorate has to wake up to the con-jobs of major projects. So many cost a fortune but achieve Sweet Fanny Adams.
Pollies are using Band-aids on torn arteries. They’re rolling over to squatters in houses you need to bulldoze for roads and trains to help five million other people. Letting violent druggies and no-hopers occupy Flinders St.
Somebody
Major projects are con-jobs. How dare the government not build the East-west con-job!
Also apparently it would have helped FIVE MILLION people.
PS homeless people are filth.

That’s why I reckon a new thing I’m part of is important. It’s the State Opposition’s Victorian Population Taskforce. It’s aimed squarely at making sure Geelong, and Victoria, have the things a rapidly-growing population needs.
Somebody

We’ve got too many jobs for the boys as it is.
Somebody

I'm a member of the Liberal party and I'm joining a Liberal party taskforce, not long after being kicked out of the mayor's office for running a dysfunctional government.

There are too many jobs for the boys!

There are some very legitimate concerns, but they are buried under a whole load of drivel.

Well since the News of The World closed down we have the world's most outraged tabloid so it's a cinch!

Well since Darryn Lyons used to take the photos that were splashed all over "New of the World", it's not surprising.

That said, the current government need to fix up the short-cuts on the current RRL quick smart.

Yeah, considering one of Darren Lyon's big schemes for Geelong was to remove all the buses from the CBD (until someone informed him he couldn't actually do that), his current day act as a friend of public transport is - like pretty much everything else out of his mouth - designed entirely to get him back prancing around in the Mayoral robes doing bugger-all else.

Then again, considering he only got in as a protest vote against the Liberal "business as usual for business" mob running Geelong, I'm not entirely convinced him bolting himself to the Liberals is going to do him much good if he ever tries to run again.

So, this clown who stood for Mayor of Geelong isn't happy Exclamation

Did this bloke do ANY research to back up his claims or is he doing a TRUMP Question

"It took less time to get to Melbourne in the 1800s. It doesn’t even stop at Werribee and it’s slower. In fact, it’s so slow Geelong commuters are actually driving to Werribee to catch a Metro train to Melbourne because it’s quicker."

TOTALLY WRONG Exclamation

If this bloke had done even 5 mins of research he would have found out that even 50 years later than 1880 in 1930 the fastest train from Melbourne to Geelong, 'The Flier' took an hour and three mins.

http://www.victorianrailways.net/timetables/1928country/45_46.html

This is an even longer running time as an all stopper today which is an even 60 mins and an express today takes 6 mins less than 'The Flier' which ran express from Spencer Street station to Geelong in 1930.

Note the semi-express services today which stop, Footscray, Sunshine, Tarneit, Wyndham Vale, Lara , North Geelong and Geelong and still take 6 mins less than the 1930 express train.

If motorists choose to drive to Werribee and battle it with the great unwashed on METRO sparks then go for it.

This story is a furphy....we are getting used to them, along with the nonsense that emanates from USA every morning whilst we have our Weeties.

With thanks to Mark Bau's site.

I am still of the view his comments regarding the spending on large road projects are correct in that they neither make sense, pay for themselves or a value for money or even solve the problem.  Victoria is stuck in a time warp for generations.

The Metro tunnel and Mernda rail link are also delivering real benefit to the rail network. VLine upgrades are worth a mention.

As for the RRL project it wasn't a bad project but had some minor issues are the longer route, the North Melbourne flyover, No station at North Melbourne, No flyover at Deer park Junction. As for travel times they are faster than the 1800s that is a misconception. You can check Daniel Bowen's blog where it compares the travel times http://www.danielbowen.com/2017/02/06/vline-geelong-travel-time/. But the RRL problems are from the cutbacks made by the previous government.

Road projects do benefit in short term but not in the long term. Of course benefits are tested that's why every project has a benefits vs cost ratio to show whether the project stacks up.

Yes there are projects that are politicised over other projects that are better benefit than others.
