Western Distributor Road in Melbourne - Fed Govt is not Convinced

Looks like another road project in Melbourne with a dodgy business case:

This project looks like a lemon, just as East-West link was.  Why are State Govt's (Lib or Labor) so addicted to silly road projects?

But of course because the project is being driven by vested interests and not the government planners. Daniel Andrews about to come undone with this project also.  The road is just not necessary in its current form.

Agree.  The overall design is terrible at the city end too.  It's a traffic sewer that'll dump 1000s of vehicles per hour into the Northwestern end of the CBD.

Hopeless.

I honestly reckon they've done this in order to force the eastern section of East-West Link on us (as it would likely join this with the Eastern Freeway) simply by making it 'inevitable', as has been done with the North East Link.

What is Daniel Andrews smoking seriously when it comes to another massive road project adding to greenhouse gas emissions and create a traffic sewer.

Let's just keep beating our head against a brick wall.

The greens have taken this issue on with social media campaigns. According to the news story the road does not make financial sense and seems to just exist for the trucking industry to get in and out of an outdated port.

Why can't we have a train to and from the port from inland terminals which is far more efficient.

Now speculating Daniel Andrews is on the skids.

If the project didn't have all these silly exits spreading into the city, then the primary benefit is for freight into the port. But this is a Transburban proposal so of course is doesn't stack up and business case is quite hidden away. In fact this project reduces benefits from another project (Melbourne metro: Arden precinct) and its obvious focus is to put cars once again into the city.

State Govt's are so addicted to silly road projects simply because of pressure from the car industry and voters in the outer suburbs unable to catch public transport. Did you see the latest news on the frankston line, almost all of it is rail  under road just to please the anti skyrail group. By trying to make everyone happy it will cost more to provide the solutions and therefore some projects don't even make sense or provide a positive cost vs benefit ratio.

Hello All,

See my comments just posted under Western Distributor needs more opposition .

Additionally , the current Federal Government does not like any Infrastructure Project of the Victorian State Labour Government Full Stop, so why should this be a surprise ?

The reality is most adult voters drive a car , and even a lot of railway workers drive to work instead of using public transport , despite most of them having an EFTA ( Employee Free Travel Authority ) . In my years as a Union Rep , car parking upset more people than any other issue , including pay ! ( I endured a forty five minute , non stop rant from one coworker on the car park issue going home one night . I made sure I never went home on the train with him again. )

As parking , for space reasons , is always restricted , I suggested a car sharing roster on the basis that there will never be enough space for everyone to drive and park at work , especially in the city . As there was no other practical alternative , an informal arrangements were thereafter entered into .

We even had a tenant moan about her car park space being used by someone else on a weekend , she made a really big deal about it . On a weekend about 80% of the underground security car park was empty , so it was not as if she had to park on the street . Her spot was on the long side wall and on the day in question , I know because I got a lift home that particular Saturday , she had a choice of at least a dozen other spots .

This explains why cars and roads get political attention , it is multiple , noisy , squeeze wheels . On another posting on this site a local Federal MP spent a lot of time getting a Bus Lane abolished , obviously schools and hospitals were too complex for this bloke , and had a big photo and article in local papers ( plural ) over his great victory in abolishing a Bus Lane .

So on that basis , best of luck trying to kill of a freeway.

Bets wishes and regards , Radioman
