Melbourne's 'missing link': North East ring road to get $100m in budget

Andrews is out of control someone please remove him from office before we have traffic meltdown in Melbourne.  For this sought of money we could have a metro service to Doncaster through those suburbs from Heidelberg to Eltham.  Running via Doncaster and to Eltham would solve the transport issues out that way.

What a ridiculous project.  Where is all the traffic going to go when and if it hits the eastern.  Shaking my head in disbelief.

PS: Industry bodies, including the RACV, think it should be top priority.

What are you raving about Question

This road will join up the obvious gap between the end of the Metropolitan Ring Road at Greensborough to enable a seamless, traffic light free road for traffic travelling to/from Eastlink.

The road Is going to be built, regardless of who Is In Government !

Powerful lobby groups will make sure It happens, so learn to accept the project and move on !

I reckon most of the traffic would use Eastlink to the Monash. Think big trucks, many of which are currently squeezing into Rosanna Road at the moment.

This fits in perfectly with the theory that no political party in government will willingly adopt a previous governments policies.

So the previous mob in government wanted to build a northern city bypass tunnel under Alexandra Parade and Royal Park to connect the Eastern and the Tulla. On being elected, the current crowd cancelled that project at an enormous cost of nearly a billion dollars.

This new proposal costs around the same and also gives eastern suburbs traffic express access to the Hume and the airport, albeit via a different route. While it won't provide a direct route to the western suburbs, Ballarat and Geelong, other projects by the current government will ease the problem there.

So we get two very different solutions to alleviate what is basically the same problem from the two crowds of politicians. I do wish they could swallow their pride, forget absurd worries about "losing face", and jointly develop a list of around a dozen priority transport projects. Once one of the agreed projects was started, the other mob would agree to finish it if they get into government, even if they think another project should have been higher on the list.

That approach would save literally billions of dollars over the wasteful way things have been done this century. But our ridiculous, strutting, posturing, foolish politicians will never agree to anything that involves sitting down with the "other side" and working out an agreed list of priority projects. Sad

Andrews was actually elected on a platform of cancelling Napthine's project, it's pretty clear that the Tullamarine/Eastern link didn't have the popular support with the public that the Liberals wanted it to. At the time I was living in a part of Melbourne that was not close by to the project and yet out local (marginal) Liberal kept bombarding us with propaganda about how life-changing East-West was going to be for everyone. I don't think anyone was really buying this as the single most important solution to alleviating Melbourne's ever-expanding peak hours - and as a then resident and regular bus/tram/train user I was also really cheesed off at Napthine for failing to deliver anything major for P/T outside of the Domain Interchange redevelopment and only too happy to help vote them out.

I agree with you that it's a shame they can't be more bipartisan and recognise the importance of getting things done but it just ain't gunna happen.

I'm inclined to agree that this project is inevitable and necessary - at present the industry in the east has to pass across an already very crowded Monash and Tullamarine to access the Hume or Western Hwys - the Ringwood-Greensborough link will mostly be used by this sort of traffic rather than by cars. My only concern is that $10 billion probably is under-estimating the ultimate cost given that it will almost certainly be made to traverse the Yarra Flats in a very long tunnel.
