visiting the Melbourne markets most weekends for food I wonder sometimes what the tracks are for running east from the market turning right into Swanson street.

They look unused but who knows.

are you meaning the lines in Market Street, the ones in Swanston street or an intersection somewhere?  Market street and Swanston Street are parallel so I need some clarification about where you mean (assuming you are in the Melbourne CBD)

I was thinking the other end of town near where the Railfan shop used to be when it moved out of Transport House and before moving to Mont Albert.  I worked around that end of town for many years before heading bush.

To answer the original question some Swanston Street trams used to turn down there and head towards the market, particularly during the peak when the terminus was full.  Often, particularly in the days of trolley poles, they would go around the corner to change ends then come back to save full trams blocking up Swanston street.

I am not sure what the current usage is.

The tracks in Victoria Street were part of the terminus for the Swanston Street tram routes. There is a signal box, built in the late 1920s, and shelter just round the corner in Swanston Street, neither of which is in current use. There are 3 trailing crossovers, 2 in Victoria Street and 1 in Swanston Street, which were used for shunting. A tram would be directed to one of 6? bays by the signal box, using numbered lights and a public address system. The terminus was moved to Melbourne University sometime in the late 80s or early 90s. It is currently probably only used for depot transfers, although I believe it may also be used by special services direct to the Shrine for the Dawn Service.

With some reversing, Essendon - Preston and Brunswick - Preston perhaps?

Essendon would not require a reverse.
