V/Line Incidents/Disruptions

Gippsland (and Pakenham/Cranbourne) services are a mess today with a track fault at Carnegie.  Line is suspended while urgent works to fix the fault are conducted.

Albury trains are copping it again due to vandalism of the ARTC line.

And the Swan Hill line continues to bring much grief.  Level Crossing speed restrictions are making every Up train at least 20 minutes late into Bendigo with resultant flow on effects.

Is this a RTBU issue or something being mandated by V/line management?  I know there is work to fit automated boom gates on some crossings but there currently seems to be no end in sight...

Has anyone written to the Minister to get a proper explanation or am I going to have to do it next time I go to Mildura Question

Why would you bother, all you'll receive is the standard "Vline will never compromise safety......." form letter.

I get the impression they're worried a broken rail might occur in the cold weather when the rails are under tension.  If that's the case, then the Swan Hill line would have the narrowest window of normal operation (i.e 10-36 degC) of just about any mainline in the world.  I could be wrong.

That's also what I had gathered. News I have heard indicates that the recent cold snap caused several rail breaks.

Well you just have to expect things like that with this new-fangled rail business. I told them not to do away with the horse and cart, but they wouldn't listen.

Does this issue exist in other states?

Agreed about 'Vline will never compromise safety' preamble, however the added 20 mins running time on the Swan Hill is inconvenient at best and presumably there is a plan to rectify the speed restrictions. Moreover its not permanent as its not even mentioned in V/Line's website or are there timetable adjustments in the public domain.

It all depends on how the questions are framed...being direct with the questions will provide a direct answer....after the 'Vline will never compromise safety' blurb.

Somebody's crook and the system fails, innit marvellous.

Industry wouldn't last a week if it couldn't cover absences.

Today's 12 05 down Albury got as far as Tottenham before we came to a stop. Informed by the conductor of a problem with the loco (N473 ?). After about 15 minutes we were away on a  spirited run to Broadmeadows and there off the train to await buses. Seymour passengers were able to get on the down Shepp.

Following an incident of my own involving a misguided public transport gamble I got to stand on Platform 4 at Footscray for 30 minutes this afternoon while I waited for the 17.04 Down Eaglehawk AKA the Castlemaine Flyer.

Due to some earlier disruption I got to experience the RRL in all of it's magestic madness as trains arrived and departed every 3 minutes heading for their various destinations.

Loco Hauled services were followed by Vlocities and Sprinters and then more Vlocities, it was a grand sight. The PIDS display chopped and changed as control slotted services in and out of the queue. I even caught a glimpse of double headed N classes hauling 3 cars (presumably) from Newport Workshops pass on the Up Williamstown / Werribee line.

I know there is still a lot wrong with Vline and PT in Victoria but it was pretty cool to watch the sheer number of passengers being moved by Vline through that corridor, a huge contrast to what it was 15 or 20 years ago.

Glad I'm not travelling this evening.

"delays may be experienced on the Bendigo line due to a Metro signal fault{16:32 13/07}"

(note the METRO part, gotta love the blame game)

"Alert 16:24 Southern Cross - Epsom will not run. For more information call 1800 800 007"

Sounds like it might be a long night.......

Delay update - Swan Hill line12:43 Swan Hill - Southern Cross is now delayed 17 minutes due to speed restrictions between Swan Hill - Bendigo. [13:45 31/07]

At 17:48 last night whilst sitting in the 17:51 Wendouree waiting to depart, I received the following message from V/Line.

'Delays are expected on the Ballarat line due to a fault at Sunshine'

The conductor also reiterated the message and did his best to keep us informed. Apparently it was a train that broke down on the RRL and it also delayed Geelong & Bendigo trains...I wondered when I heard this if it was a P Class but I digress.

Around 18:15 we were advised to leave the train and to head to the bus station where buses were 'waiting' for departure.

As the several hundred pax headed to the bus station, I headed to the Network bar and pizzeria.

Over the years I've been involved in enough of these interruptions to services to know that it's usually all over in an hour and the hapless pax are crawling along in the traffic on their probable 90 min trip to Ballan, my destination.

At 18:44 the next message from V/Line: 'The faulty train at Sunshine is now on the move. Train running will resume with residual delays'.

I had a very nice and cheap bar meal at the Network and the clincher...Happy Hour decided for me this was the correct decision.
So after two glasses of wine at $5.00 each and the meal, I wandered over to 8 South to catch the 19:15 Ballarat which, with some residual UP delays I was in Ballan by 20:30 and didn't have to be concerned about getting an evening meal together.

So, V/Line...bring on the next delay, I'll be off to the Network Bar.

Great stuff Mike, I am a bit of a fan of Happy hour at Network myself!

I thought the same thing the day a Vlocity failed at Kyneton, they detrained all Pax and called buses, 5 or 10 minutes after the last bus left the next service arrived on Platform 2 and I jumped on that.

Decided to get up early this morning to get the 07.41 Down Swan Hill to Castlemaine. When I arrived nice and early at 5A I was greeted with a 3 car set and no motive power.

Just departed more than 20 minutes late after being informed by the on train crew that the delay was caused by a "Locomotive shortage" but that as we were "lucky enough to get a locomotive" we are now on our way.

Simply pathetic. The Swan Hill line seems to be the new ugly duckling in the VLine jigsaw puzzle, a puzzle that is apparantly missing a few pieces!

A similar thing happened yesterday.  Loco hauled train became a 3 car V/lo from SCS with bustitution from Bendigo to Swan Hill. The train got into Bendigo a few minutes early though.  Not a great start for the new timetable...

And yes, the Swan Hill service is considered to be on the bottom of the pile when it comes to priorities.

Agreed entirely Exclamation

Notwithstanding the ongoing Albury line issues, the Swan Hill line seems to have taken over from the Warrnambool line as the ugly duckling line...what with the extra 20 mins built into the timetable from today for the level crossing speed restrictions between Swan Hill and Eaglehawk.

Hopefully Swan Hill doesn't become a saga like the Echuca line has for the past 10 years.

It just amazes me how V/Line could prioritise one line over another when their ROLE is to ensure they meet the timetable across all the services.  V/Line made a mess of the Albury line, the echuca line and the Warrnambool line.

Let's hope the Swan Hill line does not go the same way!

I hadn't noticed that in the new TT Mike, doesn't bode well for people (like yourself) who use the service beyond The Go, it doesn't directly affect me as I only use it occasionally for Melb > Castlemaine and vice versa. And yes, hopefully not another Echuca.......

BTW we made up a bit of time en route as we were prioritised over a Spark at Sunshine (I don't believe in miracles but.......) and then they held the Up service in the Elphinstone loop to enable us to make the scheduled cross albeit 10 or so minutes later than timetabled. We arrived into Castlemaine Platform 2 just before 09.40 and I got off.

The train sat there and I soon realised why we had been shuffled into 2. The next Up service (also a Swan Hill service) was due at 09.48 so our train was held awaiting the cross. So all that made up time was wiped off, I heard it depart at around 09.50 as I walked home.

For the past 2 days, Warrnambool trains seem to be terminating at Marshall with buses taking passengers from Geelong. Does anyone know why?

No available N sets and locos to run the service, instead VLocities are running Melbourne - Marshall with coaches operating to Warrnambool. I wonder how long until we see the P classes return from retirement?
